Looking Ahead: Tuesday Championships

The Section Five Championships are set and will be played over two nights at St. John Fisher College on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Tuesday: Pal-Mac vs HF-L 5:00 PM

Pal-Mac vs HF-LFirst up is the Class C where second seeded Palmyra-Macedon will face top seeded Honeoye Falls-Lima at 5:00. HF-L is currently 17-1 having only lost to Brighton during the regular season. They have averaged over sixteen goals per game while allowing under seven goals against. Sophomore attackman, Andrew Mapstone is the leader in both goals (53) and assists (47). He has scored points in every game, averaging 5.5 points per game. He is not the only threat as the Cougars have five other players with more than twenty goals each.

Although HF-L has not won a Section Five Championship, they did represent the Section in 2005 when there was a combine Class B/Class C tournament. The Cougars lost to Penn Yan, but entered the NYS Class B tournament where they beat Amherst (Section VI) and fell to Jamesville-DeWitt (Section III) in the final four.

Pal-Mac enters the tournament at 16-2 having only lost to Brighton by one goal and Wayne by one goal. They have averaged 14.5 goals per game will allowing only 4.2 with senior goalie Jared Hurlbutt taking most of the time and averaging 68% saves. Offensively the leader is senior attackman Brian Burger (65g-53a) who averages 6.5 points per game and has also scored in every game this season.

The teams have only played one time. In 2012 The Cougars won 15-7. When this game is over, the winner will celebrate their first Section V title.


Tuesday: Fairport vs Pittsford 7:30 PM

Fairport vs PittsfordIn the 7:30 matchup second seeded Fairport will play top seeded Pittsford for the Class A Championship. Pittsford is currently 16-1 having only lost to Victor in mid-season. Nineteen players have made the offensive scorebook for the Panthers this year. They have registered 288 points this year, averaging almost 17 points per game while allowing only five goals against. Leading the scoring is Ohio State bound senior midfielder Colby Barker who has 35g-23a. Not far behind are junior John Mozrall (28g-18a) and senior Brennan Mooney (34g-6a). Senior goalie Gavin Catalano has had the most time in the Panther goal and has 111 saves (59%). At face off, Patrick Sullivan has won 178 draws (59%). The Panthers have won four Section Five titles, most recently in 2015.

Fairport has won nine Section Five Championships, most recently in 2014. They enter this game at 13-4, having lost to Thomas, Jamesville-DeWitt, Victor and Pittsford (8-5). With one of the largest rosters in the Section (44), the Red Raiders have seen twenty-two players score points this year. Leading the list is TJ Hendricks with 41g-18a who has scored points in every game this season and averages almost three and a half points per game. Five other players have over twenty points this year, including Reese Burek (33g-16a) and Spencer Bell (24g-7a). The Red Raiders average ten and a half goals per game, while the defense, led by senior goalie, Jake Santini (147 saves, 61%) allows only six and a half goals per game.

The two programs, as Monroe County members, have played a lot of games since 2003 (when we started to collect records). Fairport has beaten Pittsford twenty-one of twenty-six times, but Pittsford has been the winner the last three times they have met.
