Hank Velepec Scores OT Win for Eagles
IRONDEQUOIT-9 at CANANDAIGUA-8 in overtime - Irondequoit edged Canandaigua 9-8 in overtime Saturday in a Monroe County D-3 game that featured
three ties and a wild fourth quarter finish. After Irondequoit jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first quarter, Canandaigua responded with six straight goals to take an 8-4 lead, which held through a scoreless third quarter. Then with under a minute left, Irondequoit scored three goals in under two minutes — at 0:32, 0:23, and 0:03 where senior attackman Colin Giudice scored with an assist from senior midfielder Hank to force overtime afterwhich Velepec won it with 2:41 left in the first ot period.
For Irondequoit (2-0), Colin Giudice led the way with three goals and one assist, while senior midfielder Velepec added two goals and one assist, including the game winner. Senior midfielder Dylan Carey contributed one goal and three assists, and sophomore Matt Long went 14-for-18 at the faceoff dot (78%). In goal, sophomore Colin Landrigan stopped 13 shots for a 62% save percentage.
For Canandaigua (0-1), three players scored their first varsity goals, freshman attackman Landon Mortier (two goals), senior defenseman Max Eckdahl, and senior midfielder Cayden Gullace (two goals). Junior attackman AJ Sterman and Ryan McKeegan each added a goal and an assist, while senior attackman Patrick Olvany picked up two assists.
