Penn Yan played a close game for the first half and then took off in the second half, defeating CA 9-5. Meanwhile, Penfield took Orchard Park 14-4 and R-H edged out Greece Lightning 4-3. Batavia used even scoring in their 10-7 win over UPrep.

Section Six representative Akron defeated Section Five representative Penn Yan 10-9 in the Western Regional Championship.  The game was tied after regulation and the Tigers scored the game winning goal in the second overtime period.

For the first time, there will be a fourth class and therefore four games played in the Western Regional (NYS quarter finals) which will pit Section VI vs Section V. The games will be held at St. John Fisher College on Saturday.

# 1259  Penn Yan Wins 22nd Title

Penn Yan won their twenty-second Section Five Title (seventh consecutive) with a 13-6 win over Waterloo.  The Mustangs scored the first four goals and held the Indians scoreless for the entire first quarter.  Waterloo scored four of the last five goals to pull the score closer than the game played.  A key component to the Mustang victory was midfielder Connor Fingar at the face-off draw.  Fingar won nearly all the face-offs and was named Class D All Tournament MVP.

The All Tournament Teams for 2017 were announced at each final. MVPs for A and C were Colby Barker (Pittsford) and James Blazey (Pal-Mac). In the Class B, the award went to Andrew Russell (Victor) and in the class D it went to Connor Finger (Penn Yan).

The 2017 championship matchups are now set after the semi finals in the Class B and Class D tournaments. The only "bracket brake" was Waterloo`s (#4) victory over top seeded Gananda in the Class D semifinals. Top seeded Victor won their contest with Brighton and Canandaigua (#3) beat Churchville-Chili. Penn Yan avenged their regular season lost of Haverling to make it to the finals where they will face Waterloo.

In the biggest upset in many years, Churchville-Chili (#10) beat Webster Thomas (#2) 15-14 in a quarter final matchup tonight. Coming into the contest today, Thomas had previously defeated Churchville-Chili 20-15 in the second game of the season and had finished the regular season with a 13-3 record.

Mark Belles scored 3g and Mitch Pfeiffer added 1g-2a for the Braves (6-2). Tim Rice made 10s (71%) and Brandon Moore recorded 6s (67%) for CA.

As has been the norm, thus far this year, many were mismatches but there were two one goal games as Pal-Mac defeated Penn Yan and Brighton beat Hilton.

March 30, 2017 - Austin Blumbergs scored unassisted, 0:21 into the second overtime period to give Penn Yan the 7-6 win over Haverling.  Blumbergs scored a total of 3g-2a to be a part of five out of seven goals.  The Rams led for the majority of the game, with Penn Yan only leading for 1:39 throughout the entire contest.

The All Tournament Teams for 2016 were announced at each final. MVPs for A, B and C were Ryan Maloney (Victor), Nick Mabe (Thomas) and Ben Emerson (Penn Yan). Players were selected on the basis of their performances in the Section Five Tournaments.
