Saturday: Championship Matchups are Finalized
DAY IN REVIEW: The 2017 championship matchups are now set after the semi finals in the Class B and Class D tournaments. The only "bracket brake" was Waterloo`s (#4) victory over top seeded Gananda in the Class D semifinals. Top seeded Victor won their contest with Brighton and Canandaigua (#3) beat Churchville-Chili. Penn Yan avenged their regular season lost of Haverling to make it to the finals where they will face Waterloo.
Third seeded Canandaigua scored the first three goals of the game and never trailed in their 16-8 win over tenth seeded Churchville-Chili. After defeating the seventh (Ath/Ody) and second (Thomas) seeds, the Saints fell to the Braves. Churchville-Chili kept the game close for a half, before Canandaigua held them scoreless in the third quarter and extending their lead to 12-5. MORE
In a game were the score was closer than the contest, Victor defeated Brighton 13-9. The Blue Devils had an 8 goal lead in the fourth quarter (13-5), before Brighton scored the final five goals. The Barons kept the game close earlier, before Victor began to slowly pull away. The Blue Devils held Brighton scoreless for 19 minutes spanning the entire third quarter. Victor advances to the finals for the fifth consecutive time (three time defending Champion). MORE
After a 12-goal loss earlier in the season, Waterloo came into Sectionals ready to avenge the loss. The Indians (fourth seed) defeated top seeded Gananda 8-6 to advance to the Finals for the first time since 2007 where they lost to Penn Yan 20-3. Gananda scored the opening two goals to take an early lead before Waterloo responded with three unanswered to end the quarter up 3-2. The Blue Panthers opening goals were scored by Henry Bush and Brett Cunningham. The Indians scoring run was six out the next seven to go up 6-3 early in the third quarter. Gananda attempted to come back, but could not get closer than one goal. Four different Indians each scored 2 goals: Nick Costantino, Adam Jensen, Andre Pinkard, Hunter Price.
Austin Blumbergs scored 5g and Ben Emerson added 3g-4a for the Mustangs as they defeated Haverling. Kyle Welker (3 saves- &4%) and Jeff Kinyoun (7 saves - 70%) spolit time in the goal.
