Mustangs Take Braves in Overtime

-  SPORTSFIVE REPORT:  It truly was another classic Canandaigua-Penn Yan contest under the Mustang lights and with a large crowd on hand. After trading goals resulting in a 5-5 tie at halftime, Penn Yan took a 9-7 lead, but let the Braves back in as they scored three in the last quarter to force overtime.

Penn Yan-CACanandaigua started off with the first three goals in the first four minutes of the game. Connor Hulme scored the first of his 2g-3a at 11:10. It was followed by a goal by Eric Munn, assisted by Brian Feldman (3g-2a) and Mitch Schaefer (1g-3a) with an assist from sophomore attackman Tyelor Dingman. Canandaigua emotions ran high with the three quick goals and for a short while, Penn Yan looked like they were in trouble. They channeled that concern into a good save by Brandon Maciejewski which was quickly followed by a Penn Yan goal from Bradley Voigt (3g-1a) with an assist from Sam Dirisio (1g-1a). Three minutes later Voigt struck again with an assist from Ben Covert. With thirty seconds left, Feldman scored on a pass from Hulme and the quarter ended with Canandaigua up 4-2.

Penn Yan took control in the second quarter, scoring the first three goals and took their first lead of the game. Scoring unassisted goals were Voigt, Covert and Sean Emerson. Feldman gave CA a halftime tie with his goal on an assist from Schaefer.Penn Yan-CA

The Braves broke the tie at the top of the third quarter when Tim Bay scored on a feed from Hulme, but the lead was short-lived as the Mustangs came back with three in a row. Dirisio tied the game at 6-6 when he scored at 7:49 on a pass from Austin Fingar (2g-1a - 13/24 f/o and 8gb). Emerson scored two unassisted goals in just over one minute to put the Mustangs up 8-6. With just over four minutes left sophomore attackman Ben Smith-Wilcox (2g-1a) scored for Canandaigua, but Penn Yan finished the quarter with an unassisted goal by Fingar. After three quarters, Penn Yan led 9-7.

Penn Yan appeared to be in control after scoring the first goal in the last quarter. Rion Davison scored at 9:03 on a nice feed from Voigt to put the Mustangs up 10-7. The ball moved up and down the field for the next five minutes with both defensive units scoring take-aways. The tide turned at 4:12 with Canandaigua scored the first of three goals, starting with a goal by Hulme (from Feldman). Although the Mustangs often took the ball to their end of the field, they were unable to maintain control of the ball and gave Canandaigua more offensive sets. Smith-Wilcox received the ball from Schaefer and brought the score to within one goal (10-9) at 3:02. Penn Yan won the next face off, but lost the ball before taking a shot. Canandaigua did the same, but got that ball back from the Mustangs. After a missed shot, Canandaigua Head Coach Ed Mulheron called a time out with about 0:15 left in the game. The play he called failed, but as the ball bounced back in front of the Penn Yan goal Smith-Wilcox picked it up and gave it to Feldman who scored just as the clock hit 0:00.

Penn Yan won possession of the ball in overtime and took quite a bit of time to set up several drives that were turned away by the Braves. With 1:46 left, Austin Fingar ended the game with his unassisted goal.

Canandaigua (4-3) will face Webster Thomas while Penn Yan will play McQuaid Jesuit on Tuesday.
