Penn Yan vs Akron

The Penn Yan Mustangs scored their first three goals in under three minutes at the start of the Class C game against Akron from Section Six. It was a potent of things to come as the powerful Mustangs took the game to running time in their 19-4 victory in Class C. Andrew Perl scored first on a feed from Bradley Voigt in the first minute of the game. Voigt then scored a minute later. Perl hit again with an assist from Voigt for the third goal. Just over six minutes later, Rion Davison scored after receiving the ball from Austin Fingar who gave it to him on the left crease. Akron scored their first goal with 1:20 left in the first quarter after beating his defender out front and shooting a bounce shot past Penn Yan goalie Brandon Maciejewski. The quarter ended with the Mustangs up 4-1.Penn Yan vs Akron

Sophomore attackman Craig Gerhardt took the Mustangs to a 5-1 lead in the first minute of the second quarter on a drive from front left. Junior attackman Larson Sundown, who has over 400 career points for Akron, scored on a drive from the center at 8:05, taking the score to 5-2. The next PY trip down field found Voigt, behind the cage, finding Gerhardt on the crease to give the Mustangs a four goal lead at 6:44. With time winding down, Austin Fingar fed the ball to Andrew Perl, cutting to the crease. After calling almost back to back time outs, Penn Yan`s Fingar scored on an outside sidearm and Penn Yan finished the half up 8-2. A last second penalty by Penn Yan gave the Tigers a man up at the top of the third quarter.

Perl opened the scoring in the third after Penn Yan held the Tigers scoreless during their man up opportunity. His behind the back shot came on a late arriving feed from Fingar. With just over seven minutes left in the quarter, Voigt played his defender, who lost his footing, giving Voigt a one-on-one with the goalie. After faking high he bounced the ball into the net with a wrist shot. The Mustangs led 10-2. On a fast break, Perl scored after the Akron sophomore goalie, Frank Uebelhoer, caught a piece, but the ball still went in. After winning the next face, Voigt, behind the cage, fed Gerhardt on the crease for a 12-2 lead with 4:31 left in the quarter. With just over two minutes left, Perl scored his sixth goal on an outside side arm shot from top right. The Mustangs took the game to running time with a goal from Sean Emerson with a feed from Voigt with 1:34 left in the quarter. The quarter ended with the Mustangs up 14-2.Penn Yan vs Akron

The Tigers stopped the running clock with a beautiful feed from Owen Hill to Zak Hayes, but six second later Penn Yan scored on a fast break (Sam Dirisio from Finger). Perl then scored his seventh goal of the game for Penn Yan whose goalie, Brandon Maciejewski, made save after save. He finished the game with 13 saves (77%). Voigt broke past a defender and scored on a shovel shot at just over six minutes left. Ben Covert took the long pitch from Mace in the cage and ran down field for an unassisted goal with four minutes left. Wyn Blueye broke free of his defender and scored for Akron on a bounce shot over the shoulder of Maciejewski. Although Akron had a number of sets in their end the Penn Yan defense was aggressive and strong throughout the game. After a last second time out, Penn Yan won 19-4 against Akron, the high powered scoring team that averaged nineteen goals per game this year.
The Mustangs have won eighteen Western Regional and now moves on to the final four where they will face the undefeated team from Cazenovia (Section Three) on Wednesday night. It will be a replay of last year`s game between the two dominant teams. Last year Caz won the game (8-7) and went on to win the State Championship. The game will be played at CNS (Syracuse) at 8:00.
