2024 Season Wrap Up

There were thirty-four teams playing in Section V. Bishop Kearney scheduled eight games but elected to forgo the tournament at the end of the season. There were players on the final rosters, up 256 players from 2023. Penfield and Victor carried the largest roster with thirty-eight players and Haverling and Pal-Mac with the smallest with nineteen. 

McQuaid Jesuit ChampsThere were four classes for the sectional tournaments. McQuaid (A), Victor (B), and Aquainas (D) were top seeds and won their championships. In Class C, HFL (seeded second) won their game with top-Pal-Mac.

McQuaid had a 6-4 win against second seeded Penfield, Victor won their game against second seeded Irondequoit 9-6. Honeoye Falls-Lima had a 16-11 win against top seeded Pal-Mac ending the undefetaed season for the Red Raiders.

The teams were able to play a full season again in 2024. The first games were played on March 26th when nine games were played. The last regular season games were played on May 16th.

The 301 regular season games were played and the 81 league games determined the league championships. According to the Section V website, in Monroe County-D-1 it was Fairport (8-6). In MC-2, Irondequoit (10-2) took the championship and in MC-3 Honeoye Falls-Lima (9-2) was on top. Pal-Mac (10-0) won the Finger Lakes East title and Mynderse (5-4) took the West title. There was no GRALL league this year.

HFLChamps

At the end of the year, the Section V Head Coaches selected the post-season award winners including their All-League players. Then, after reviews of twenty-nine nominations, they selected six USA Lacrosse All-Americans and six All-Academics. Named All-Americans were Drew Angelo (HFL), Jonathan Bucciarelli (Greece Storm), Jonah Crarier (Ironderquoit), Jack Herendeed (Victor), Keagan Hoesterey (Pal-Mac), and Chase Perryman (HFL).

Named All-Academics were Jeremey Askin (Geneva), Ben Cook (HFL), Anthony DeRosa (Schroeder), Alex Garrow (Wayne), Cam Ryan (Victor), and Adam Schembri (Penfield).

Penfield Head Coach John Schembri was named Coach of the Year from Section V and the Bob Scott Award winner was Adam Schembri from Penfield.

The Coaches of Section V created a new award last year for the "Official of the Year" which was awarded to GVLOA official Dan Lacrosse.

Victor Champs

The Monroe County Division 1 Player of the Year was Mike Valent (Rush-Henrietta). Cameron Mesh (Spencerport) was the Division 2 Player of the Year and Jack Faiola (Canandaigua) was Division 3 Player of the Year.

Nominees for the Bob Scott Award were Drew Pagano (Schroeder) and Jason Mosher (Hilton) and the Section V and USA Lacrosse Bob Scott Award winner was Keenan Edwards (East United-Eastridge).

The Monroe County Coaches of the Year were Dan Stone (Victor) in MC1, Bill Buttaro (Spencerport - MC2), and both London Booker (East United-Eastridge) and Eric Goodberlet (HFL) in MC3.

Assistant Coaches of the Year were Mark Foeder (Victor) and Matt Gold (Pittsford) from MC1, Marco DeBole (Brighton) from MC2, and Jim Tilotson (East United-Eastridge) and John Herriman (Canandaigua from MC3.

Penn Yan Champs

The Finger Lakes East Player of the Year was Keagan Hoesterey (Pal-Mac). Max Heieck (Geneva) was selected Attackman of the Year, Alex Garrow (Wayne) was selected as Midfielder of the Year and Owen Weterings was picked as Defenseman of the Year. Peyton Lich (Pal-Mac) was selected as the Goalie of the Year.

The Finger Lakes West Player of the Year was Griffin Hillimire (Mynderse).  Tarikue Blueye (Marcus Whitman) was the Attackman of the Year, Melkamu Blueye (Marcus Whitman) was named Midfielder of the Year, and Issac Pundt (Mynderse) was the Defenseman of the Year. Kaiden Larsen (Midlakes-Red Jacket) was selected as Goalie on the Year. Connor Gorton (Marcus Whitman), was selected as the nominee for the Bob Scott Award.

Alex Garrow (Wayne), was selected as the nominee for the Bob Scott Award.

The Finger Lakes Coaches of the Year were Joe Hill (Pal-Mac - East) and Joe Caraher (Mynders - West). The Assistant Coaches of the Year were Ryan Knope (Wayne - East) and  Martin Williz (Bloomfield-Honeoye - West). The Persons of the Year were Derek Lich (East) and Jake Korneau (West).

Fairport (Class A), Gates Chili (Class B), Batavia-Notre Dame (Class C) and Aquinas (Class D) were awarded the Steve Morgan Sportsmanship Awards by the Genesee Valley Lacrosse Officials Association.

After the regular season, the Section V tournaments were conducted. McQuaid Jesuit (Class A), Victor (Class B), HF-L (Class C) and Aquinas (Class D) were the Sectional Champions in 2024.

There were All-Tournament Teams this year and there were MVPs for each class. Selected as MVPs for classes A, B, C and D were John Harding (McQuaid), Jack Herendeen (Victor), Drew Angelo (HF-L) and Noah Olbrich (Aquinas).

POYs

The SportsFive/Section V Players of the Year were Jonah Carrier (Irondequoit) in offense and Jonathan Bucciarelli  (Greece Storm) in defense. The Sportsman of the Year was Noah Olbrich (Aquinas).

The New York State Tournaments saw a change with an out-bracket game for Classes C and D which required that those champions played against the Section VI champions to play in the quarter finals. Both HFL and Aquinas won those outbracket games against Lake Shore/SIlber Creek (Class C) and Akron (Class D).

In Class A, McQuaid beat Orchard Park and then beat Liverpool in the semifinals. In Class B, Victor beat Niagara-Wheatfield, and then Vestal to reach the finals. In Class C, HF-L beat Johnson City (Section IV) and then lost to Jamesville-DeWitt and in Class D, Aquinas beat Chenango Valley (Section IV) and then lost to Marcellus in the semifinals. Section V sent two teams to the Championships, where McQuaid Jesuit defeated Farmingdale (VIII) in overtime and Victor lost to Southside (VIII) in overtime.

The All-Section V Awards were back this year with fifteen first team, fifteen second team, and ten Honorable Mention picks. They have not been announced yet.

At the end of the season at least fifty-nine seniors have made college commitments. They will become part of over three hundred players from Section V who are currently playing at all college levels.
