2025 Preview: Livonia-Avon-Geneseo
Lakers Gear Up with Renewed Determination and Added Talent
As the Livonia-Avon Lakers prepare for their 2025 season in Class C, they look to build upon a solid 2024 campaign where they achieved a 10-8 record. Despite losing four key seniors-Colin Ellsworth, Ryan Matzek, A.J. Peri, and Owen Weterrings-who contributed significantly on both ends of the field, the Lakers are eager to showcase their returning talent under the guidance of head coach Mark Rumfola.
Adding Geneseo
The Lakers have added Geneseo to their merger with Avon and Livonia. The addition did not affect the Class as they remain in Class C.
A Look Back at 2024
Despite these losses, the Cougars have a solid foundation of returning talent. Leading the charge is All-League 1st Team midfielder Quinn Kailbourne, who contributed 47 goals and 31 assists last season.
Key Graduates
Colin Ellsworth, a defensive stalwart, earned All-League 3rd Team Defensemen honors. Ryan Matzek, known for his versatility in midfield and defense, was named to the All-League 2nd Team Defense. Owen Weterrings, a crucial player in face-offs and defense, racked up several accolades, including Finger Lakes Defenseman Player of the Year and 1st Team LSM Midfield.
Returning Stars
The 2025 Among the returning players, all eyes are on Joey Cinquino (M/FO), Max McEnerney (A/M Cortland), and Colton Rose (G). Cinquino, an All-League 3rd Team FO Midfield honoree, showcased his skills at the face-off X, winning 59 out of 89 draws last season. McEnerney, an All-League 2nd Team Attackman, had 31 goals and 14 assists and led the team in goals, assists and points. The Lakers will also look to Henry Walters who added 25g-4a. Meanwhile, goalie Colton Rose, who earned spots on the Section 5 All-Tournament Team and was the Finger Lakes 1st Team goalie, is set to protect the net and improve his 220 saves and 62% save rate. Rose has committed to Wheeling for college, promising a bright future ahead.
Outlook for 2025
With seven rising seniors, seven juniors, and two sophomores returning, the Lakers have a balanced mix of experience and young talent. Coach Rumfola, entering his second season as Head Coach with Livonia-Avon, aims to leverage this blend to create a cohesive and formidable team. Their goal is clear: to go beyond the semi-final hurdle and contend for the championship.
Expect the Lakers to come out with intensity from the first whistle, driven by the disappointment of last year's narrow loss in the semis. With strong leadership from their returning award winners and the strategic acumen of Coach Rumfola, the Livonia-Avon Boys Lacrosse team is poised for an exciting and competitive 2025 season.
