2017-03-28 - Owen VanWie scored the game winning goal with 0:06 left in the first overtime period to give Spencerport the 13-12 win over Gates Chili.  VanWie was a major presence throughout the game winning 19/25 face off draws and leading his team with 20 ground balls.  This was the 21st time that the Rangers had faced the Spartans and with the win they moved to 10-11 against Gates Chili.

The game was a back and forth contest with both teams leading and six tie scores.  It was also a game of streaks with Spencerport scoring six in a row, and 9 of out 10 in two stretches.  Gates Chili also had a long stretch of five and a span of 7 out of 8.  Both teams came out of the gate shooting with each team getting a goal in the first two minutes.  Spencerport`s VanWie assisted Mark Schnauber for the opening goal only 1:15 into play.  Thirty-five seconds later Gates Chili tied the game with an unassisted goal from Nicholas Ehmann.  This was Schnauber`s first Varsity game and he finished with 4g for the Rangers.  Cameron Nitti scored the second Ranger goal (also his first Varsity goal) to give Spencerport the lead for the second time.  The final goal of the quarter tied the game back at 2-2 with Ehmann scoring his second.  He finished with five goals for the Spartans.

In the second quarter, Gates scored two more goals to take a 4-2 lead within two minutes.  Jarrett Kirkpatrick scored back to back unassisted goals with drives to the cage.  The remainder of the second quarter belonged to Spencerport.  The Ranger scored the next six goals with points from Nitti, Schnauber, Jonathan Agnes (2) and Jack Lehtonen.  Much like the first quarter, Gates Chili scored the final goal.  Tim Eaton scored with 0:15 remaining in the half.  Spencerport led 7-5 going into halftime.

The Rangers kept up the pressure in the third with the first three goals.  Agness scored his third with an assist from VanWie before VanWie added two of his own.  Spencerport held the largest lead of the contest with a 10-5 lead at 9:15 remaining in the third.  Ehmann and Kirkpatrick helped get the Spartans back on the board with two goals each to end the third quarter.  Ehmann`s were assisted by Kirkpatrick and Eaton while Kirkpatrick`s third and forth goals of the night were also unassisted.  The Rangers held a small 10-9 lead going into the final quarter.

In the fourth, Gates Chili`s Kyle Krystan scored the tying goal with 10:41 remaining in regulation.  This was the first time that the game had been tied since 2-2 with 0:46 remaining in the first quarter.  A minute and half later, Schnauber added his third to put the Ranger back on top, where they remained for the next five minutes.  Gates Chili never gave up and scored back to back goals with 3:59 and 3:21 remaining to take over the lead for the first time in over two quarters.  The Spartans held on to their lead into the final thirty seconds.  The game tying goal to force overtime was scored with only 0:20 on the clock with Schnauber`s fourth goal (also assisted by VanWie).  

As noted above, VanWie`s game winning goal with scored with 0:06 remaining in the first overtime period.  VanWie`s 3g-4a, 20 gbs and 19/25 at the face-off draw were instrumental in the Ranger`s victory.  For Gates-Chili, Ehmann finished at 5g-1a and Kirkpatrick finished at 4g-1a.  Midlfielder Carson Spychala led the Spartans with five ground balls.  In the cage, Robert Phillips recorded 16 saves.
