Tuesday: Schroeder gives Penn Yan a Scare

Five games were postponed but ten games were played. Schroeder led for most of the game, but Penn Yan came back for an 8-5 win on the road. Bloomfield-Honeoye scored two goals in the last quarter to beat Wayne Central 5-3. Midlakes defeated Batavia 11-10. Hilton was a 9-7 victor over Churchville-Chili. Waterloo beat Gananda 6-4. The other winners were Irondequoit, Eastridge, Fairport, Victor and Livonia.

  --  Penn Yan fought back to defeat Webster Schroeder 8-5. The Warriors led or tied the game for 42:15. It was not until the final six minutes that Penn Yan took their first lead of the game. The Warriors were demonstrative in the first three quarters before the Mustangs kicked it up a notch and scored the final six goals of the game.

Webster's Nick Powell opened up the scoring with an assist from midfielder Danny Rizzo. Five minutes later and Liam Wheatley scored unassisted for the Warriors. Penn Yan's Rion Davison scored the first of his two goals with 0:36 remaining in the first quarter. Schroeder led 2-1 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, Schroeder scored first with Powell assisting Kenny Nelson. Schroeder led 3-1 for four minutes before Penn Yan scored with 1:12 remaining in the half. Bradley Voigt scored the first of his five goals to bring the game back within a single goal. Schroeder led 3-2 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Schroeder kept up their pressure and added two goals in the first four minutes. Powell and Nelson each scored their second goal for the Warriors. With 8:42 remaining in the third quarter Schroeder led by three goals. The Mustangs scored the final six goals with three coming in the third and three coming in the fourth. It wasn't until Voigt scored with 5:45 remaining in the game that Penn Yan took their first lead (6-5). They added two more goals at 3:00 and 2:37 to secure the three goal victory.

Face off midfielder Brandon Grace had an exceptional game for the Mustangs. He finished 12/13 (92%) with 10 ground balls. Penn Yan goalie Brandon Maciejewski finished with a reported seven saves. For Schroeder, defensemen Chase Kuhl and Josh Reed each finished with four ground balls. In the cage, Willie Klan finished with 12 saves (60%).  return to top

  --  Special  Two goals scored in the last three minutes of the game gave Bloomfield-Honeoye a 5-3 victory at Wayne Central this afternoon.BH at Wayne

B-H scored first on a feed from behind the cage by senior Jerrett Hertzel to junior midfielder Brett Hodgeman on the right wing. Hodgeman took a hard side arm shot for the score at 6:23. The Eagles came back quickly. On the ensuing face off sophomore Nick Leone scooped up a ground ball and sent it to fellow sophomore AJ Jenkins who quickly put it in the net. After only nine seconds, the game was tied at 1-1. With just 1:11 remaining in the first quarter, junior midfielder Allan Smith beat two defenders with a drive straight down the middle for an unassisted goal. The Pride led 2-1 at the end of the first quarter.

One only goal was scored in the second quarter. Although Bloomfield was man down for an extended stick penalty, the Pride man-down unit held fast and limited shots by the Eagles. Shortly after the penalty expired B-H scored when Smith, up top, threw the ball to senior midfielder Jarrett Riker at the crease. Riker caught the pass, turned and shot for the goal at 1:42. The Pride led at the halftime break, 3-1.

It was all Wayne Central in the third quarter as they put up two unassisted goals to take the score to a 3-3 tie. BH at WayneSophomore midfielder Nick Graziose scored an unassisted goal at 10:07 when he swept from the top of the box to the right wing. His first two attempts at the same drive were stopped by the B-H junior goalie Evan Multala. Sophomore attackman Chris Schimpf had a strong drive from behind the goal and as he ran to scoring position dished the ball cross-crease to Austin Leckinger who scored. The sophomore midfield's goal tied the game at 3-3 where they remained for the rest of the third quarter.

The ball made many trips up and down the wet grass field at Wayne and the defensive units on both side of the field produced knocked down passes and long stick ground balls. Bloomfield-Honeoye broke the tied with 2:41 left in the game when Hertzel picked up a loose ball in front of the goal and popped past Wayne's sophomore goalie Justin Townsend. On the face off, Smith controlled the ground ball and ran it straight to the Wayne goal and scored on a bounce shot. Although Wayne had a couple of shots on goal, Multala made both saves to protect the win.  return to top

Senior goalie Eric Fischer had 3s/3ga and Alex Shoemaker had 4s/4ga for Irondequoit (11-1).

Brighton's junior midfielder Casey Kopp led the book for the Barons with 4g-1a. Sophomore Andy Wong filled in for regular starter Tommy Hilling who was sick. Wong made 11 saves for Brighton. The Barons play at Thomas on Thursday.  return to top

  --  Hilton scored five of the first six goals in their 9-7 win over Churchville-Chili. The Cadets also held off a third quarter push from the Cadets. One major key to their success was midfielder Harald Juergens. He finished 13/18 (72%) at the face off draw. He also led his team with 17 ground balls.

Juergens also scored the opening goal of the game for the Cadets. Only 0:12 into the game, he picked up his own ground ball off the face off and CC vs Hiltonran straight to the goal. His early face off win was a indication of what was coming. He won the next face off and kept the possession for Hilton. With 6:18 remaining Mitch Smith scored the first of his three goals unassisted for Hilton. Nine seconds later and Churchville-Chili showed that they could score on face off fast breaks as well. Trevor Hodgins won the ensuing face off and passed the ball off to attackman Andrew Goodermote. Goodermote dodged around his defenseman and put the ball into the back of the net. Hilton finished out the opening quarter with two more goals. Jake Montgomery scored the first off an assist from midfielder Brian Russo. Freshman Shawn Kimble scored unassisted with 0:11 remaining in the quarter to give the Cadets a 4-1 lead.

In the second quarter, Hilton scored the first goal and then was held scoreless for 22:31. Smith scored his second goal unassisted for the Cadets. Churchville-Chili scored the next five goals to take the one goal lead with 8:27 remaining in the third quarter. After retaking the lead, Churchville-Chili held the ball in their offensive end. This resulted in a "keep it in" call against the Saints. They could not hold the ball and Hilton got it back with less than one minute remaining. The Cadets scored with 0:47 remaining on a fast break pass from Kimble to Smith. The Cadets won the next face off and scored again with 0:04 remaining with an unassisted goal by Alex Milliken. The final minute of the quarter moved the Cadets from being down by one goal to leading by one goal.

In the fourth quarter, the Cadets extended their lead by two goals with another goal from both Milliken and Montgomery. Churchville-Chili was down by three with 3:11 remaining. They added their final goal with 2:41 remaining when midfielder Jake Mortier fed Kevin O'Donnell. For Churchville-Chili, Hodgins led in ground balls with eight. Attackman Ryan Cosgrove finished with seven. In the cage, Jack Corcoran finished with eight saves. For Hilton, Mark Detroia finished with 10 saves.  return to top

Starting goalie Pete Gropp finished with four saves (80%) for the Red Raiders. Jake Newkirk played the second half and recorded three saves.

For R-H, junior Chauncey Scissum finished with 2g-1a to lead his team. Senior attackmen Andrew Tirabassi and Brandon Smith each added one goal. Goalie McKenzie Spooner, who spent three quarters between the pipes, also finished with a goal for the Royal Comets. In the cage he finished with eight saves. Victor was led in scoring by senior midfielder John Maloney. He finished with 5g-2a. Senior attackman Mitch Rupp finished with 2g-3a for the Blue Devils. Rupp also led in shots with eight, five on cage. In the cage, Chris Saar and Troy Dowdle split time. Saar finished with seven saves in three quarters and Dowdle finished with two saves in the final quarter.

HF-L finished with a majority of their goals coming from attackmen. Drew Tallon (4g), Jason Boike (3g) and Connor Flaherty (1g-1a) all scored from the attack. Midfielders Ian Holtby (1g-2a) and Peter Pluta (1g) rounded out the scoring. Defenseman Keanan O'Brien and midfielder Holtby led with five ground balls each.   --  Waterloo scored the final two goals to defeat Gananda 6-4. The game was close throughout with both teams leading at different points and the score tied at 2-2, 3-3 and 4-4. Waterloo scored the first two goals of the game with unassisted goals from both Zarrien Sloan and Mike Wright in the first quarter. The opening quarter ended with the Indians leading 2-0.

Gananda came back quickly in the second quarter to tie the game and then take the lead. Zach Rink scored the first goal for the Blue Panthers with an assist from Trevor Schraffenberger. Rink also added the second goal of the game; this one was assisted by Ian Palmer. Palmer came back and scored a goal of his own to give Gananda their first lead of the game. Waterloo's Mike Wright came back and tied the game once again for the Indians. The first half ended with the score tied 3-3.

No goals were scored in the third quarter. With 10:24 remaining in the fourth quarter, Waterloo's Dominick Sindoni gave the lead back to the Indians with an unassisted goal. Gananda did not stay down long. They scored with a face off fast break from Palmer to keep the game tied. The game went back and forth for the next seven minutes. With 3:14 remaining, Tim Wright scored his lone goal of the game to give Waterloo the one goal lead for the third and final time. Mike Wright scored the final goal of the game with 1:04 remaining to increase the lead to two goals.

In the cage for Waterloo, Josh Bailey finished with eight saves. Steven Fisher, in the goal for Gananda was credited with 13 saves.  return to top

  --  Livonia scored the first 11 goals of the game on their way to a 19-5 win over East Rochester. Livonia was led in scoring by attackman Cody Cisco with 6g-2a. Attackman Josh Wester finished with 4g-4a. Cisco finished with 12 shots for the Bulldogs, ten on cage, and Wester finished with seven shots, all on cage.

Face off midfielder Derek Bishopp finished at 80% for the game (16/20). He also finished with the lead in the ground ball count with 17. In the cage, Ethan Jamison played three quarters and recorded five saves. Troy Lischer played the final quarter and recorded one save.

For East Rochester, attackmen scored all five of their goals. Jordan Michele and Raymond Shalvoy finished with two each and Darnell Rhodes finished with a single goal. In the cage, Liridon Dervisholli finished with 17 saves. return to top
