Thursday: Irondequoit 6-5 over C-C, HFL in OT
There were ten games in Section Five today. Livonia had an exciting win over Geneva, HFL won their game in OT, Irondequoit won their fifth game of the season with a win over Churchville-Chili and Pittsford beat Schroeder 9-5. Other winners included Hilton over Gates, the Thunder over the Lightning in the Greece game, Thomas over Eastridge, Fairport over R-H and Spencerport over ER.
-- Livonia had an exciting win this afternoon as they traveled to Geneva and defeated the Panthers 9-6, keeping their winning streak alive at six.
After taking a 3-2 first quarter to a 6-4 half, the Bulldogs controlled the ball for much of the second half as the Panthers had five penalties in the third and five more in the fourth quarter. Livonia scored on three of the ten. Geneva was one for one in extra man offense.
"This was a very big win for our team and program at the Varsity level in Class C. They were a very tough and physical team and we took advantage of some man-up opportunities to either score or posses the ball when we had to," said Coach Brett Wood.
Scoring for Livonia were Wyatt Struble (3g), Mike Donals (1g-2a), Ryan Smith (2g), Jeff Wester (3g-3a) and Matt Girolmo (1a). Justin Becker played all but one minute in the goal and recorded 14Ss/5ga and Jamison finished up the game and made 1s/1ga for the Bulldogs (6-0).
Scoring for Geneva were Frank Triana (2g), Billy Eddington (2a), Will Brennan (1g), Chris Tapscott (1g), Dan Pufnock (1g) and Tyler Travis (1g). Ross Dinan made 10s/9ga for the Panthers.
-- Clai Kuhn scored with 1:09 remaining in the first overtime period to lead HFL over Victor 4-3. The match-up was a battle of the goalie with both goalie having outstanding games. Jay Tallon, of HFL, finished the game with 16 saves (84%) and Kevin Donnelly, Victor, finished with 10 saves (71%).
HFL's Jake Lee scored the first two goals of the game. Kuhn assisted Lee in the opening goal at 10:14. Lee scored the second goal unassisted at 8:27. The Cougars took a 2-0 lead into the second quarter. In the second, Victor retaliated with two unanswered goals of their own. Matt Koval scored unassisted followed by Trevor O'Shea scoring (assisted by Dale Mattice). Going into the half, the score was tied at 2-2.
In the third quarter each team scored one goal. HFL's Lee adding his third (assisted by Jason Breau) then Connor Kimball scored for Victor (assisted by Koval). Both teams remained scoreless in the fourth quarter.
Collin O'Shea and Jordan Gushue lined up at the center for the overtime face-off as they had 10 times previously. Gushue had won 7 of the previous attempts and was feeling confidant. As the whistle blew both teams began to fight for the ball, with Tyler Burgasser picking up the loose ball. Burgasser led HFL with six ground balls. The Cougars took the ball down on offense and looked for their opportunity. However, before they could take a shot the Blue Devils took control of the ball and successfully cleared it up the field. The Blue Devils put the ball into Koval's stick. Koval took a hard shot at the cage, but Tallon came up with a game changing save. The Cougars cleared the ball back to their offensive side and this time they got the shot off, with 1:09 remaining Kuhn took the shot that won the game.
Scoring for HFL were Lee (3g), Kuhn (1g-1a) and Breau (1a).
Scoring for Victor were Koval (1g-1a), Kimball (1g), O'Shea (1g) and Mattice (1a).

-- Pittsford was a 9-5 home field winner over Webster Schroeder this afternoon. The game was close throughout and even at the end of the game it was not clear if Schroeder had an extra "run of scores" up its sleeve. In the end, Pittsford's patience and controlled offense was the difference.
Schroeder scored first when Cody Consul (3g-1a) scored his first goal of the day after picking up a loose ball on the crease and popping it in over the head of Pittsford senior goaltender Harry Goluses. Pittsford tied the game on an outside bounce shot by TJ Iuppa (3g) with a feed from Steven Troup. After Pittsford received an off-sides penalty, the Warriors scored the go-ahead goal, with 3:02 left in the quarter as Mike Blood received the ball from Consul and threw a blistering shot into top of the net. The Warriors led 2-1 at the end of the first quarter but that was the last time Schroeder had the lead.
Pittsford had lots of ball time, throughout the game, as each time they brought the ball down to their offensive end, they attempted to have each player touch the ball before starting a play. This plan worked well for them as the Webster defense played loose man-to-man and rarely challenged the Panthers until the moved toward the goal.
Steven Troup tied the game with a high corner shot after driving to the right. With three minutes left in the half, Pittsford scored the go-ahead goal just after a Webster penalty expired when James Purpura scored the first of his two goals on a right drive from behind the cage and a pass from Alex Kober. Pittsford led 3-2 at the half.
Just before time expired for the half, Pittsford was assessed a penalty and so Schroeder started in man up and with the ball at the top of the third quarter. The Warriors, however, failed to convert. The Panthers added the next two goals to take the score to 5-3. At 10:36, Iuppa scored the first goal (in man up) when he received the ball from Tom Rodenhouse who sent the ball from behind the net to the front, giving Iuppa a mid-range shot. Sophomore attackman Alex Kober scored an unassisted goal at 8:43 after executing an outside-to-inside dodge and faking low, while going high.
Schroeder started a come-back, scoring two in a row starting on the ensuing face off when Consul ran straight down the middle of the field. After dodging one defender, there was no slide and he won the on-on-one against Goluses. About three minutes later, Mike Blood scored his second goal when there was a defensive lapse by the Panthers that gave him an unobstructed shot, which was hard and fast.
With Webster closing in, Pittsford came back on the next face off. Purpura received the ball from Matt Gold in an inside fast break to give the Panthers a 6-4 lead. With one second left on the third quarter clock, Consul scored on a fast break from the Warrior clear and a pass from senior middie Jake Spadoni. The quarter ended with the Panthers up 6-5 but with a feeling that it was still anyone's game.
Pittsford received a one minute slashing call just twenty second into the last quarter, but the man down defense not only kept the Warriors from scoring, but gained possession of the ball. A few minutes later they advanced the score to 7-5 when Rodenhouse scored on a drive and dump from Troup. Twenty second after that goal, the Panthers grabbed the momentum with another goal, this one from Iuppa (unassisted) when he drove a high arc, high on the crease, and let loose a hard sidearm shot that gave the Panthers a three goal lead. Although Webster had the ball a couple of times in the closing minutes, Pittsford scored the final goal after pulling the Schroeder man down defense out and then feeding an interior cutter to the crease. Kober scored the goal with the feed from James Burke.
Penalties certainly played a part in the loss for Webster as they were assessed eleven penalties (to Pittsford's three), but the big difference was Pittsford's patience and their focus on "taking care of the ball" that gave them time to set up well constructed offensive sets.
Scoring for Pittsford were Iuppa (3g), Troup (1g-2a), Purpura (2g), Rodenhouse (1g-1a), Kober (2g-1a), Gold (1a) and Burke (1a). Senior goalie, Harry Goluses had 9s/5ga for the Panthers (5-2).
Scoring for Schroeder were Cody Consul (3g-1a), Mike Blood (2g) and Jake Spadoni (1a). Junior goalie Scott Tota played for 44 minutes and had 8s/8ga and sophomore goalie Erik Saltrelli added 2s/1ga for the Warriors (2-3). Schroeder plays Geneva on Saturday.

Gaffney finished the game with 16/17 face-off wins and Stiles finished with 10 saves (63%) between the pipes. Gaffney won the first 16 face-offs straight but lost the final face-off when long stick Kyle Eckam picked up the ground ball from the wing. Gaffney was also called for a conduct penalty for having words with the official after that loss. Stiles played an extremely well in the cage with a number of point blank saves to keep the Cadets in the lead.
The Spartans scored the first two goals of the game, and the only two goals of the first quarter. Steven Campaniello scored the first goal on a drive down the left side toward the cage. Gaffney, after winning the ensuing face-off, passed the ball to Matt Fracassi for the tying goal. Webb came back with his second goal on a fast-break drive (assisted by Brian Eckam). Hilton scored the last goal of the quarter as Mike Crumlish drove from a dead ball situation from behind the cage and put the ball in the back of the net. The score was tied at three at halftime.
Hilton came out of the break strong and scored the three straight goals (and four of the next five goals). Crumlish fed the ball from behind the cage and hit Bernsten for the first goal. Brett Endres scored the next goal (unassisted) after picking up a ground ball in front of the cage. The third goal was scored by Gaffney (assisted by Fracassi) during a double man-up situation. The next goal was scored on a fast-break by Gates-Chili; Grant Ferguson scored with an assist from Adam Wacenske. The final goal of the third quarter was scored with 0:01 remaining on the clock. After a dead ball situation on the left sideline, Fracassi took a hard underhand shot from beyond the restraining line that found its way to the back of the net. Hilton led 7-4 at the end of the three quarters.
The Cadets scored the first goal of the quarter with Bernston scoring (assisted by Fracassi). Gates-Chili scored the final two goals of the game, but could not close the gap enough. Grant Ferguson scored both goals for the Spartans with Webb assisting both goals. The first was scored with parallel drives from the left with Webb feeding Ferguson on the crease; the later was scored during a fast-break situation.
