JD Ends Victor`s Season
SPORTSFIVE REPORT:
TD Ierlan took the first face off right to the goal, but was unsuccessful and after a quick trip up and back, sophomore defenseman Jack Callahan gave the ball to sophomore attackman Max Lambert for the first goal of the game. After a number of saves at both ends of the field, senior attackman Griffin Johnson picked up a loose ball near the crease and popped it in past Justin Young to tie the game at 1-1. J-D won the possession after the face off and defenseman Conal Brady took the ball inside and dumped it to Griffin Feiner at 3:50 for the go-ahead goal for the Red Rams. After one trip up and down, the Rams took the ball behind the cage and as Johnson drove the right cut from the left he passed the ball to Bucknell bound Grayson Burns, cutting to the crease for another J-D goal. After save by junior goalie Joe Morgan, a quick pitch and a fast break gave the Rams another goal. Johnson, on the outside, hit Burns at 2:07 giving JD a 4-1 lead. Ierlan lost his first face off of the day (after winning the first four), but the Blue Devils took the ball away and at the other end of the field Jamie Trimboli ran from right to left over the top and scored on a right handled sidearm at 1:03 and the quarter ended with J-D up 4-2.
At the start of the second, Ierlan, who finished the game winning 24 of 28, picked up a technical face off win and the Blue Devils got a goal from Luke Bartkoski who set up from behind and drove past his defender on the right side. After another face off win, Trimboli had a nice face dodge and bounced one past Morgan to tie the game at 4-4 at 10:23. After a tenth face off win, sophomore midfielder Mike DeMarco scored from way out front to give the Blue Devils a 5-4 lead at 9:25. DeMarco then broke up a Rams clear and created an inside fast break for Barrow to Maloney, giving the Blue Devils a 6-4 lead. Another broken clear by the Blue Devils resulted in an open net goal by David Cardillo with a pass from Bartkoski, who stripped the ball from Joe Morgan. Ryan McKee broke Victor`s six goal streak with an outside shot from transition at 5:01. Another broken clear game the Blue Devils another goal at 2:44. A Maloney pass to Bartkoski hit a defensive stick and went into the goal. Ierlan won another face off but he was tripped and Victor, in man up, saw Maloney feed Trimboli for a 9-5 lead with 2:20. Bartkoski scored the next Blue Devil goal with a drive from behind the net and a shot between the legs of Morgan. After outscoring the Rams 8-1, the Blue Devils went into the halftime break up 10-5.
Ryan Durkin scored in the first minute of the third quarter on an outside bounce shot, to start a J-D comeback. Victor came back on the ensuing face off with a drive and shot from the top front by Dan Barrow to regain a five goal lead. After a long possession, Feiner brought the ball in from the left wing and fed the ball to Burns on the crease at 9:35 to take the score to 11-7. After a failure to advance call the left the ball on the Ram`s offensive end, Feiner quickly put the ball into play and threw it to Johnson who fed Burns near the crease. He faked low and shot high to take the score to 11-8. Victor won the face off and had two point blank shots on Morgan who stuffed them both. Two minutes later Johnson scored on a drive from behind as the Rams scored their fourth unanswered goal at 6:14. With just six seconds left in the quarter, the Red Rams took the score to within one with a top to crease feed from Ryan Durkin to Brad Carr. A technical face off win gave J-D the ball and with time winding down, Ryan McKee took a shot from nearly midfield that hug the ground and got past Young. The game was tied at 11-11 at the end of three quarters.
After a hard fought face off was won by J-D, Durkin scored on an outside bounce shot to give the Red Rams their first lead since the first quarter. Victor tied the game at 12-12 after the next face off when Trimboli moved the ball to Dan Barrow who scored with a hard side arm shot from the top right. J-D came right back with a quick goal from Johnson who picked up the ball at midfield and took it right to the goal. After winning another face off, the Red Rams went right to the fast break goal and found Johnson to Burns for a 14-12 lead at 10:17. At this point J-D had scored eight of the last nine goals. After a couple of trips back and forth J-D scored another goal with pinpoint passing to the crease. Johnson found Ben Wipper open on the crease for the Red Rams` fifteenth goal at 7:46. Dan Barrow scored his third goal of the game in man up after getting the ball from DeMarco and it was a two goal game. But that would be the last goal for the Blue Devils as the Rams scored two more unanswered goals. The first at 3:25 was by Feiner who took the ball from Young on a clear and scored on the open net. The second was by Matthew Murad on a drive from the left at 2:01. After a J-D timeout the Rams ran out the clock. They will face Yorktown on Saturday.
