Drew Williamee Takes CA to Finals

- Top seeded Canandaigua took the game into overtime to defeat fifth seeded Irondequoit 12-11 in the first of today's two Class B games. One of the key reasons for the victory was junior goalie Quentin Shedrick. Shedrick came into the game with 7:10 left in the third quarter with his team down 7-8 and Iron vs CAfinished with eight saves and three goals against, including holding the Eagles scoreless for the entire fourth quarter. Although both offensives kept up the pressure throughout the game, the defensive standout, in the final quarter and a half, was standout. Offensively, the game winning goal was from Drew Williamee who finished with 3g-2a to lead the Gray Wolves. Patrick Olvany and Jack Stanney both added 3g each with Mike Belles adding 3a. For the Eagles, the standout was Cooper Moore with 6g.

The game was back and forth throughout with both teams taking control of the game. The Gray Wolves came out the gate with the opening goal during man-up offensive. Williamee scored his first goal of the night off a feed from Belles, less than two minutes into the contest. Irondequoit responded with back-to-back goals to take their first lead of the game. Moore scored unassisted with a hard outside shot after a loose ball near the top of the restraining line. This was followed by a high crease pass from Ben Wilson to Kieran Stenzel with 6:54 left on the clock. Iron vs CACanandaigua responded with two goals of their own to get back on top. Williamee started the drive from behind the cage with a feed to Olvany. Two minutes later, Ryan Bremer scored with a shot from the right flank. The last goal of the quarter tied the game up for the third time in a row with Dylan Carey scoring off a single drive from the left side. The game was tied 3-3 after the first quarter.

The second quarter started very similarly. Canandaigua scored another man-up goal to start of the quarter with Williamee assisting Olvany. Two minutes later Moore scored his second goal of the game with a very strong drive through the center of the Canandaigua defense and forcing the ball into the back of the cage. Over the next four minutes Canandaigua scored three back-to-back goals to take the first multi-goal lead of the game. Belles assisted the first two goals with Olvany scoring the first and Marshall Bolster scoring the second. The third Gray Wolves goal was scored by Stanney with a dodge to the inside. Canandaigua led 7-4 with 4:07 left on the clock. The Eagles kept up the pressure and were able to add two more goals before the end of the half. Stenzel scored with a feed from Wilson, followed quickly by Moore’s third unassisted goal of the game. The Gray Wolves held a slight lead (7-6) going into halftime.

Iron vs CA

The third quarter started off with Irondequoit keeping up the pressure. After scoring the last two goals of the second quarter, they added on the first two goals of the third quarter to take back the lead. Moore scored his first assisted goal of the game during man-up with Colin Giudice feeding him the ball. The next goal came off a face-off fast-break with Stanney winning his own ground ball and finishing into the back of the net. Shortly after the second Irondequoit goal, Shedrick came into the game and the Gray Wolves defense began to stop the Eagles time and time again. Canadaigua tied the game at 8-8 with their lone goal of the quarter after coming out of a timeout and driving all the way down the field. Iron vs CABelles grabbed his third assist of the game to Lucas Buck; however, that was the only Gray Wolves goal of the quarter. Although the defense stepped up and stopped any settled goals, Irondequoit added three goals during unsettled situations. Moore added another unassisted goal after an interception and fast-break goal with 5:33 left on the clock. The final two goals were within 30 seconds with an extra-man goal by Ryan Avery and another fast-break goal by Moore. Irondequoit led 11-8 going into the final quarter.

The final quarter was all Canandaigua. The defense continued to shut down settled goals, and the Eagles could not capitalize on any unsettled situations. Shedrick added seven of his eight saves in the fourth quarter. Offensively, Canandaigua added the three goals they needed to force overtime. Stanney scored off a feed from Bremer off a sidelines restart with 6:19 left in regulation. Within a minute, the Gray Wolves scored their last two to tie up the game. Williamee scored unassisted and Stanney scored on a fast-break with a feed from longstick Will Rheude. Over the final five minutes of play both teams had shots at the goal; however, neither could capitalize.

Overtime started with Andrew Scully grabbing his own groundball from the draw and the EaglesIron vs CA called their timeout. They had the first chance at the goal but their shot went wide, and it was Canandaigua's turn. After clearing the ball, they called their own timeout. They failed to capitalize at this point and Sven Habitzreuther made back-to-back saves to keep the Eagles in the game. Irondequoit had their second attempt on offense and once again could not put a shot on cage. Canandaigua’s second attempt on offensive was enough. Williamee scored with a drive from the lower right corner and finished with a nearside shot that finished into the back of the net.

Top seeded Canandaigua will face off against second seeded Victor on June 2nd at Hobart on Tuesday.    [ Story and BOX SCORE]   - - More images in the photo gallery.
