Victor Takes Thomas to Remain Undefeated
Friday: DAY IN REVIEW: In another exciting game, Victor beat Thomas with three goals in the last quarter to remain undefeated with the 9-6 victory at home. Pittsford beat Irondequoit 8-6 with four unanswered goals in the fourth quarter. Four extra goals in the first quarter gave HF-L the win over Rush-Henrietta.
It was another big game as two undefeated team met to knock one team off the perfect season. In a close game, full of fine defense on both ends and lots of "slow down" offense by Victor, the Blue Devils won 9-6 on this rainy evening. Thomas took the first lead, but not for long and the teams were tied at 1-1 after one quarter.
It was back and forth in the second as the teams traded goals to a 3-3 tied at the half. In the third, Thomas, once again, scored first and then added a second as Ryan Prine received the ball from Liam Mayer on an interior crease cut that made him one-on-one for the goal. It was the Blue Devils turn as they came back with two including one at 1:38 (Sam Gotham from Cal Lambert) and the other with 6 seconds when Thomas Gravino took the feed from Gotham and scored on a fast break clear. The teams were tied once again, this time at 5-5.
A goal from Lambert on an assist from Pax Marshall gave Victor the lead at the top of the last quarter. At 6:15 Marshall scored alone and then at 5:16, after Thomas pulled their goalie to try to get the ball back, Gotham scored alone giving the Blue Devils a three goal lead. Thomas tightened it up with a goal by Cade Spencer to take the game to 8-6. Victor scored with 17 seconds left when Gavino scored on an open net.
Once again, Thomas goalie Ethan Ruller made numerous big saves and, as expected Victor faceoff man Logan Callahan won a large number of faceoffs. Thomas was very successful with their zone defense but when Victor went ahead, it took them a while to come out of it as the Blue Devils spent many minutes partiently passing the ball around the outside. Victor was warned to "keep it in" a number of times in the seconds half, but without much pressure they were able to keep passing the ball arounf the perimeter. The last two goals of the game were the result of an effort by the Titans to double the ball and they were successful once resulting in Spencer's goal. Victor increases their record to 10-0 and Thoas drops to 10-1. [BOX SCORE]
