--  Special  Brighton's defeat of Webster Thomas is a story of two halves. The Titans dominated the first half and Brighton controlled the second half. Even with Brighton's, it wasn't until the fourth quarter that Thomas lost control of the game. The Barons scored four unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to move from down by two to leading by two. A key component in the turnaround for Brighton was face-off man Max Brauer. Brauer finished the game 21/24 (88%). He also won the last 16 straight face-offs. This extra possession for the Barons was vastly important in their comeback.File photo

Brighton scored the first goal only 0:34 into the game. Steven Cregan scored the first of his 3g-2a on a drive from the left side. Thomas came back and scored two goals. John Zawacki scored on an open net after stripping goalie Jordan Carey during a clear. Carey finished the game with only three saves for the Barons. Two minutes later Adam Jollow scored with an outside shot. Brighton scored their second goal to tie the game during man-up. CJ Wool scored the first of his 2g-1a on an outside shot (assisted by Cregan). Joe Stacy scored the last goal of quarter after making a cross-crease cut and getting the ball from Justin Bird. Thomas led 3-2 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Thomas scored three more goals before Brighton got back on the scoreboard. Thomas led 6-2 with 7:04 remaining in opening half. Troy Crevier scored on an outside shot from the top of the restraining box. One minute later Ben Morrill scored on a similar shot also from the top. One minute after that Jake Giudice scored on a drive from behind the cage to beat Carey. Brighton scored the last two goals of the quarter to keep the game close going into halftime. Cregan scored both goals with assist from Kurt Minges. For the first goal, at 4:02, Minges drove from behind the cage and dumped the ball to Cregan. The second goal, scored with only 0:04 remaining in the half, was scored with a feed from behind in the net to 10 yards out on the left side of the net.

The third quarter started slowly. Both teams took their time with the ball. Thomas goalie Don Grace came up with four saves in the quarter. He finished with 11 saves (50%) for the Titans. Offensively, the Titans had trouble hitting the cage and missed six shots in a row before scoring the first goal of the quarter with 4:36 remaining. Giudice scored with a feed from Zawacki from behind the cage. Brighton scored two minutes later with a drive along the goal line by Minges. Brighton added two more goals in the final thirty seconds to tie the game before the end of the quarter. Casey Kopp scored both goals for the Barons. The first goal was scored with the goalie out of the net. Grace chased a ball to the sideline, but it did not go out of bounds. Cregan picked up the loose ball and Coach Rullermoved it to Wool who moved it to Kopp for the goal before Grace could get back into position. The second goal, once again scored with only 0:04 remaining on the clock was scored with a drive from behind the cage by Kopp. The score was tied 7-7 going into the final quarter.

Thomas came out in the first two minutes of the last quarter and scored two goals. The first one began with a cross-crease feed. Brighton's defense knocked down the ball near the crease and Zawacki capitalized with a ground ball and a goal. 0:31 later Thomas scored their ninth goal. The goal was scored by long-stick Doug Passero. Passero took the ball the entire length of the field and finished with the ball in the back of the net.

Brighton scored the next four goals to secure the win. Alex Lebowitz scored two of the goals. He scored the first goal with a drive from behind the cage. Wool scored the tying goal with a feed from Cregan on a fast-break goal. Minges scored the go ahead goal with a man-up shot from outside. The final Brighton goal was scored by Lebowitz. He drove from behind the cage after the stall was put on by the officials and put the ball into the back of the net. Brighton held the ball for the next three minutes after the goal. With 0:16 remaining, the Titans in man-down and the goalie out of the cage, Lebowitz shot the ball instead of holding it. Grace came out of the field to make the stop and gave Thomas one more shot. They cleared the ball and play was stopped with 0:03 remaining on the clock after a penalty. With 0:03 remaining, Thomas had one more shot, but missed the pass on the crease.

One of the major problems for the Titans was hitting the cage. Thomas took 31 shots with only 13 on cage (42%). Leading in the ground ball count for Thomas was attackman Zawacki with five. Jollow and Hauck both added three ground balls to the count. For Brighton, Brauer led with 12 ground balls. Defenseman, and face-off wing man, Dan Pierce finished with seven and Cregan finished with five for the Barons.  return to top
