Churchville-Chili - New Coach New Excitement
Churchville-Chili 2022
Class B - Monroe County League
The Saints began their varsity program in 2005 with Logan Roberts as the Head Coach. Since then there have been seven coaching changes. Chris Fiala is the newest and he has high hopes to take Churchville-Chili back to the glory days, when D.T. Benedict (now at Brighton) had a 17-1 record in 2016.
There were only five senior on last year's offensive books. Midfielder Patrick Mitchell (Canisius) was the leading scorer with 26g-11a. The other seniors accounted for only twelve more, so there are experienced offensive players returning for this season.
Senior Brett Seaman (A/M) has been a starter since his freshman year and led the team last year in assists and points with 17g-21a. He will be playing at St. John Fisher College next year. Also returning is sophomore attackman Colin Dunkin (22g-8a). He was a starter last year as a freshman. Assistant Coach Gino Marcello says "He never wants to be on the sideline...[he has a] true nose for the goal and always looks to make the offense as best as it can be."
The defensive positions are a strength for the Saints. Senior D/LSM Liam Podszebka has been on the varsity since eighth grade and has been a starter every year according to Coach Marcello. "He is an outstanding student athlete that has always put the team first...[He] always goes out of his way to help younger players on both sides of the ball." He led the team in ground ball production last year with 40. Also a D/LSM is sophomore Pat Hoff, is a two year starter. Defensive midfielder Brock Osbourne is a junior this year after producing 9g-2a-45gbs-2tks last year. "Pat Hoff-10-D/LSM- 2 year starter that has always been up to the task with whatever we throw at him. Never lets up and always goes the extra mile to be in position to make a play at any point in the game."
All that defense is designed to protect returning senior goalie Chris Tahaar, a two year starter and leader of the defense. He made 99 saves last year (50%)
The Saints play a MC-D3 schedule so they have games against Brockport, HF-L, East United-Eastridge, Irondequoit, and Gates Chili. They will play those league teams twice during the regular season. Coach Fiala has also set up games against Williamsville-North, Hilton, Spencerport and Wayne. They lost their first game of the season against Pal-Mac on March 26th. Except for a 6-1 second quarter, the Saints played well against the Red Raiders.
Assistant Coach Gino Marcello says that although there have been many disappointments in the past, the coaches have worked hard with many of the players in the off-season and "have pushed them all as they have put in the work. We are excited to see how they respond [as the season progresses]."
