Looking Ahead - Tuesday Championships A and C

The Section Five Championships are set and will be played over two nights at St. John Fisher College on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Tuesday: Wayne vs Geneva 5:00 PM
First up is the Class C where second seeded Wayne will face top seeded Geneva at 5:00. Wayne is currently 12-6 after defeating HF-L in the semi finals on Friday. It was an overtime 11-10 win for the Eagles as sophomore John Reagan (4g-1a) scored the game winning goal.
Wayne has averaged eleven goals per game while allowing just over seven goals against. Seven players have scored over twenty points this year with Ryan Cahill (15g-37a) leading in points and assists and Spencer Quinn (37g-6a) leading in goals scored.
This is the first trip to the finals for Wayne and in the two meetings this year Geneva came out on top. In the first game, one goal in the last quarter gave the Panthers a 6-5 win. In the second meeting a last quarter goal gave Geneva a 5-4 victory.
Geneva enters the tournament at 11-6. They have averaged 10.3 goals per game will allowing only 5.1 with Sam Miller (38g-37a) leading the offense, but there are three others with over twenty points. Sophomore attackman Dugan Doeblin (37g-16a) and sophomore midfielder Nick Askin (38g-7a) also provide offense for the Panthers. One key, however, in the success of Geneva this year is senior goalie Jacob Drennen who has a reported 67% save average with 173 saves. He has had eight games this year with save percentages over 70% including an 83% in the second Wayne game.
Geneva has won six Section Five Championships, the most recent in 2008 when they won their third in a row. The last time they played in the finals was 2013 when they lost to Penn Yan.
The Wayne-Geneva historical matchup shows and 8-7 advantage for Wayne (since 2012), with the Eagles winning three times in 2016 and twice last year. This year it has been Geneva in two one goals games. This should be an exciting Class C Championship.
Tuesday: Penfield vs Fairport 7:30 PM
In the 7:30 matchup second seeded Penfield will play top seeded Fairport for the Class A Championship.
Penfield is currently 13-5 with their five losses from top teams including West Genesee (13-10), Victor (11-8), Thomas (14-11), Irondequoit (11-10) and Fairport (8-3). They have outscored their opponents 212-128, averaging almost twelve goals per game will giving up just over seven.
Leading the scoring for the Patriots is senior attackman Joey Barboza (38g-30a) but six others have over thirty points this year including Jacob Emmick (26g-30a) and Jack Cummings (35g-14a). Senior Ben Webster has won 173 draws this year (58%), William Fell leads the defense in takes with 19 and sophomore goalie Travis Wagner (55%) has turned in five games with save percentages over 65%. The Patriots have won five Section Five Championships, the most recent in 2013 when they defeated Webster Thomas.
Fairport has won eight Section Five Championships, most recently in 2014 when they beat Pittsford 7-6. They enter this game at 13-4, having lost to Pittsford (7-6), Thomas (11-10), Irondequoit (7-6) and their last loss, on May 3rd to Victor (13-7). They have not lost since, winning seven in a row. The Red Raiders have scored 156 goals this year (9.2) while allowing 102 (6.0). They punched their ticket to the finals with an 8-5 win over Pittsford.
As usual, The Red Raiders have a large roster (40), but only five players have over twenty points this year. Sophomore midfielder Klay Stuver leads in goals with 43g-13a. Senior attackman Spencer Bell leads in assists and points with 42g-18. Also a key offensive player is Reese Burek, who is back from an injury and has 20g-12a and was named a US Lacrosse All-American this year. Fairport has shared goalie time between two sophomores and a junior (Tim Defendis, Rory Maher and Josh Gangarossa) and all three are over 54% this year.
These two programs, as Monroe County members, have played a lot of games since 2003 (when we started to collect records). Fairport leads the race 14-13, but the Red Raiders have won the last four.
