2017 Season Wrap Up
Section V lacrosse lost a team during the season (UPrep) to low numbers and injuries so the Section ended the season with thirty-six team. The session ended with 955 Varsity boys playing.
The top seeded teams in Classes A and B won their Championships as Pittsford (#1) beat Fairport (#2) 9-5 in Class A. In Class B Victor (#1) beat Canandaigua (#3) 13-4 after Churchville-Chili (310) took out Thomas (#2) in the quarter finals. In Class C Palmyra-Macedon (#2) beat HF-L (#1) 16-11 giving the Red Raiders their first Sectional trophy. It was the first year for the new Class D, and Penn Yan (#2) won their twenty-second sectional title was beating Waterloo (#4) 13-6
The first five games this year were played on March 25th, starting with HF-L beating Brockport 13-4. The last regular season games were played on May 19th, ending with Victor defeating Fairport 10-8. The 318 regular season games were played and helped to determine the league championships. In Monroe County it was Victor (MC1), Pittsford (MC2) and HF-L (MC3). Pal-Mac and Wayne both had league recorded of 10-1 with their only loos to each other in Finger Lakes play and McQuaid won the GRALL title.
At the end of the year, the Section Five Head Coaches met to select post-season awards. The coaches selected their All League players. Then, after reviewing thirty nominations, they selected six US Lacrosse All-Americans and All- Academics. Named All-Americans were Tyler Olbrich (Aquinas), Brett Randall (Brighton), Devin Andrews (Canandaigua), Nate Arnold (Pal-Mac), Peter Schwab (Penfield) and Chayse Ierlan (Victor). Named US Lacrosse All-Academics were Carson Greene (Canandaigua), Michael Kozar (Fairport), John Galbraith (Pittsford), Pat Mahoney (Geneva), Bryce Saba (Wayne) and Garrett Ruff (HF-L)
The Monroe County Division 1 Player of the Year was Chayse Ierlan. Devin Andrews and Brett Randall were the Division 2 Co-Players of the Year and the Division 3 Player of the Year was Andrew Doktor from Eastridge.
The Section Five Bob Scott Award winner was Peter Schwab (Penfield).
The Finger Lakes Players of the Year were attackman Jon Ecker (Wayne), midfielder Sam Miller (Geneva), defenseman Bryce Saba (Wayne) and goalie Jake Drennan (Geneva). The Finger Lakes Player of the Year was defenseman Nate Arnold (Pal-Mac).
The GRALL Player of the Year was attackman Evan Kelly (Aquinas).
Hilton (Class A), Canandaigua (Class B), Honeoye Falls-Lima (Class C) and Marcus Whitman (Class D) were awarded the Steve Morgan Sportsmanship Awards by the Genesee Valley Lacrosse Officials Association.
After the regular season, there are several championship opportunities for teams that qualify. Pittsford (Class A), Victor (Class B), Pal-Mac (Class C) and Penn Yan (Class D) were the Sectional Champions in 2017.
All Tournament teams were selected for each Class. The MVPs for A, B, C and D were Colby Barker (Pittsford), Andrew Russell (Victor), James Blazey (Pal-Mac) and Connor Fingar (Penn Yan).
The SportsFive Players of the Year were Devin Andrews (Canandaigua) in offense and Chayse Ierlan (Victor) in defense. The Sportsman of the Year was Thomas Arao (Fairport).
The final games of the year are the New York State Tournament. Section Five hosted the quarter finals, semifinal and Championship games at St. John Fisher College. In Class A, Pittsford defeated Orchard Park (Section 6), 2-6, Baldwinsville (Section 3), 11-8 but fell in overtime to Ward Melville (Section 11) in the finals.
In Class B, Victor won their third New York State Championship (in a row) after beating Hamburg 7-4, Vestal (Section 4), 11-5 and Yorktown (Section 1), 9-3. In Class C, Pal-Mac beat Grand Island (Section 6), 8-6 and fell to Jamesville DeWitt (section 3), 20-6. In Class D, Penn Yan fell to Akron (Section 6) in the Western Regionals, 10-9.
At the end of the season fifty-two seniors have made college commitments. They will join the over three hundred and twenty players from Section Five who are currently playing at all college levels.
