Fairport Over OP in NYS Quarters
SPORTSFIVE REPORT:
Orchard Park won the first face off and took the ball down field where Fairport goalie Joey Scalise made the first of his twelve saves. After taking the ball up field, senior attackman Ryan Crater scored the first of his three goals in a row as he hit on a fast break pass from Dylan DeLorme. On their next trip down, the Red Raiders scored on an outside shot (Crater from Dan McAvoy) and a minute a half later, Fairport scored again (Crater from Nick Orsini) to give Fairport a 3-0 lead with just under six minutes left in the first quarter. Sophomore midfielder Ron Shul scored the first goal for the Quakers with an outside right wing shot that went high into the nets. The first quarter ended with Fairport up 3-1.
Senior midfielder Kacin Welch scored the first goal of the second quarter for Fairport as he ran a sweep right and shot into the stick side edge past OP senior goalie Charlie Wistner. Orchard Park returned with two quick goals to take the score to 4-3. The first goal was scored in man up as Kevin Goltz scored on a pass from Chris Murphy. The next goal was scored after a shot by Adam Belica bounced a ball past Scalise. The ball went high in the air and was handled by Kevin McParlane who bounced the ball into the net. Fairport was hit with two penalties, giving the Quakers a great deal of ball time, but they were unable to score in the man up periods. Fairport then went man up and scored a quick goal as Ryan Bowen found sophomore attackman Cam Gebhardt cutting right to the doorstep. On the ensuing face off, the Red Raider went right to the goal and shot, but as the ball moved toward the goal, Fairport called time out and the goal was disallowed. Another Fairport goal was disallowed when the officials called the shooter in the crease, but the Red Raider quickly got the ball back and Dan McAvoy scored an unassisted goal with a very strong side arm shot from the top right. Fairport led 6-3 at the half.
Fairport scored first at the top of the third quarter as Justin Kesselring scored with an unassisted side-arm shot as he was sweeping form the top right. McParlane gave OP a goal about a minute later as he dodged his way from back left. Orchard Park continued with another goal at 6:36 when Chris Murphy found a cutting Jack Crowley at center crease. Less than a minute later McParlane scored again. After being knocked down he shot a rising blast while falling down. Fairport returned with an unassisted bounce shot by McAvoy, but the Quakers came back with two goals to tie the game at 8-8. Ron Shul scored from his face off win and thirty second later, Goltz scored on an unassisted drive for the tie. Just before the quarter ended, Fairport got a goal from Kacin Welch as he beat his man up top and can straight down the middle. Fairport led 8-8 after three quarters.
After the ball traveled up and down the field for almost five minutes, Kesselring scored on an outside right shot, giving the Red Raiders a 10-8 lead with 7:17 left in the game. After a time out by Fairport, the Red Raiders took a great deal of time off the clock with slow and deliberate play. After a while Kesselring scored on an outside shot from top right to give the Raiders a three goal lead. His goal was the last in the game as Fairport won 11-8 and will now advance to the NYS semifinals where they will play Fayetteville-Manlius (Section Three) at CNS on Wednesday (3:30).
The Red Raider long poles had an amazing day, playing tough man-to-man and very aggressive riding. Their work near the goal keep OP from taking quality shots, but when they did, goalie Joey Scalise (12s/8ga) made many big stops. Junior long-stick Allen Thibodeau played an excellent game when matched up against Goltz.
