Day One Championships - C and A

 SPORTSFIVE REPORT:  

Having punched their tickets in the semi-finals, the first Championship Day is set for Tuesday. Honeoye Falls-Lima, the top seeded team will play #3 Wayne to open the night starting at 5:00 PM. The second game will feature top seeded Pittsford who will play #2 McQuaid Jesuit at 7:30PM.

HFL vs Wayne

HFL vs Wayne#1 HFL (13-4) will play #3 Wayne (14-4). The teams did not play this year but have played each other five times, with HFL up 4-1. The Cougar losses came from Canandaigua (6-7), Irondequoit (10-12), Hilton (8-15) and Brighton (4-7). Wayne's losses were all in the first six games they played including Spencerport (3-6) on 3/28, Brighton (6-13) on 4/4, Hilton (9-15) on 4/6 and Irondequoit (9-15) on 4/15. After that last loss, the Eagles have won twelve game in a row. Both teams have first year Head Coaches. Eric Goodberlett was the Assistant last year under Jack Beaney. The two men switched jobs before the season and Jack is now the Assistant to Eric. In Wayne, Assistant Coach John Hanss, picked up the reigns when Eric Carlson resigned on April 21st.

Honeoye Falls-Lima: Junior attackman Chase Perryman is the leader in goals, assists and points with 45g-39a. Three other players have over thirty points including sophomore midfielder Quinn Kailbourne (23g-13a), sophomore attackman Mathew Brassie (22g-12a), and junior midfielder Patrick Donahoe (23g-9a). A key to the Cougar success has been junior faceoff midfielder Drew Angelo who has won 258 draws (80%) and has added 19g-10a. Angelo has recorded three 100% games and twelve games at over 70%. Junior defenseman Ben Cook is the take-away man for the Cougars, registering 25 thus far. 

Wayne: Senior Nate Michel is the leader in goals, assists and points with (48g-39a, but five others have over thirty points this year. Junior midfielder PJ Ostrowski has 36g-16a, senior Louis Profetta has 30g-21a), Junior middie Alex Garrow has 32g-16a, and sophomore Michel Mason has 35g,9a for the Eagles. Wayne has access to four goalies. Most of the time (473 mins) has belonged to senior Dylan Coene who has made 78 saves (52%). 

Pittsford vs McQuaid Jesuit

HFL vs WayneTop seeded Pittsford (16-2) will play #2 McQuaid Jesuit (13-3). The teams did not play each other this season. Historically, Pittsford has won 7 of 8 games, the most recent, an 11-10 win on 2021. The Panther's only losses this year were to Fayetteville-Manlius (9-14) and Victor (6-7) in overtime. McQuaid's losses came from Loyola Academy (3-5), Hilton (4-11), and Spencerport (9-10) in overtime. The Panthers beat Hilton twice and beat Spencerport (7-8). They both beat Rush-Henrietta: Pittsford (12-7) and McQuaid (8-5) in their season opener. They both beat Irondequoit: Pittsford (86) and McQuaid (6-4) and both beat Brighton: Pittsford (12-6) and McQuaid (13-5). The Knights are on a five-game winning streak and the Panthers are on a seven-game streak. Perhaps one place where their may be an advantage is in sectional championship appearances. Although Pittsford last win was in 2017, they have been in the finals the last two years and know what to expect. The last appearance for the Knights was in 2007 when this years players were in in pre-school.

Pittsford: Senior attackman Rex Kesselring leads the team in goals and points with 40g-8a and junior midfielder Luke Fliss leads in assists with 13g-22a). Senior middie Ben Steingass has 21g-37a, Ian Erskine has 31g-9a and a number of others can come up with goals, often in transition including Jackson Green (20g-5a), and Avery Valenti (24g-5a). Among the log-sticks, Noah Hezel is one of the top defensemen and has 52gbs and 26tks. Leading in control takes is junior Nate Macpherson with 48gbs and 27tks. Pittsford's starting goalie is senior Nolan Deehan who has made 118 saves (56%). 

McQuaid Jesuit: Junior attackman Vincenzo Giangreco lead the lead in goal production with 34g-6a. Senior midfielder Henry Coke leads in assists and points with 24g-20a. Also scoring big numbers are junior attackman John Harding (23g-12a), sophomore midfielder AJ Quagrello (22g-5a) and senior Chris Woodward (14g-10a). Eight different players have faced off for McQuaid this year, but most of the draws have been taken by freshman Domenic Giangreco who as won 125 faceoffs (62%) and leads the team in ground balls with 71.  The takeaway king is senior defenseman Gavin Brownlie with 24 takes and 49 gbs. Junior defenseman Brenton Paladino follows with 15 takes and 33gbs and the starting goalie is junior Will Gordan who has made 127 saves (61%).
