Spencerport Hopes to Keep Moving Forward

Spencerport 2022

Class B - Monroe County League

Spencerport won their first eleven games last year, with Penfield breaking their streak and later, ending their season in the quarter finals. Their only other loss in 2021 was a one-goal game with Hilton. The Rangers had much to celebrate and hopes that that momentum will help this year.

SpencerportHowever, they lost some strong seniors to graduation. Connor Mesh (32g-39a-104gbs-143FO=69%), moved on to St. John Fisher. Attackman Tyler Gostling (43g-5a) and midfielder Jacob Zimmerman (28g-13a) are gone. All three were first team all-league picks. In the defense Anthony Inclima, who led the team in takes with 17 has graduated.

There are some exciting returning players set for this season. Among them are junior midfielder and faceoff specialist, Cam Mesh (16g-8a-89fo=73%). He is expected to be a factor at both ends of the field. Returning in the attack are seniors Justin Schnauber (23g-22a) and Austin Mandarano (5g-3a) and sophomore Anthony Rodriguez (29g-15a).

Sophomore Taylor Kaye gets the goalie spot this year as he replaced four-year starter Adam Birkbeck who had 80 saves (51%) last year. Taylor had little time last year but made 14s (48%) and he is set to make the defense his own. Protecting in front is junior defenseman Brenten Sheffield who tied Inclima for the team title in takes last year. Coach Buttaro says "Sheff is a big fast physical defenseman. He returns this year to anchor and lead our defense."

The Rangers play a Monroe County-D2 schedule which includes Victor, Penfield, Schroeder, Thomas, Canandaigua, and Brighton. Coach Buttaro has added non-league games with LaFayette, McQuaid Jesuit, Churchville-Chili, and Aquinas and crossover games with Hilton, Greece, Pittsford, Fairport and Rush-Henrietta. It will be a challenging schedule.

“Our team is excited to get back on the field after last year`s 13-3 season. We return five starters, but I am excited to watch our young defense grow throughout the year. This team is motivated and ready to take another step in 2022.”
