Players of the Week - Group 5

Player of the Week

Section V Boys Lacrosse Coordinator Mike Simon in conjunction with the Connors and Ferris law firm are, once again, sponsoring recognition of noteworthy performances throughout the season.

For "Group 5" we have four players who had standout performances in since the last set of awards.

Defensive Player of the Week

Garrett KayserGarrett Kayser - Geneva

Garrett Kayser has had some big games in the last few weeks. He made nine saves (56%) when the Panthers beat Wayne 10-7 and the junior goalie had eleven saves (74%) when Geneva defeated Pal-Mac 11-4.

Head Coach Jeff Dunham says: "Garrett`s play this past week served as a catalyst for our entire defense. He made big stops when called upon. He made a couple of huge saves late against Pal-Mac to seal the win. Additionally, his ability to clear the ball jump started our offense on several occasions. His game is peaking at the right time."

Defensive Player of the Week

Hunter SmithHunter Smith - McQuaid Jesuit

Sometimes it is hard to find a roaming long pole who really stands out. Hunter Smith is all over the field for the Knights, running on the faceoff wing, slowing down strong midfielders and backing up the close defenseman. The Richmond commit had a great day in the McQuaid/Canandaigua game where he was assigned to slow down Sam Bennett.

Head Coach Terry Corcoran says: "We have been in every game we played this year against the top teams in Section V and IV because of our defense. Hunter does it all every game - his man rarely scores all even 6 on 6 - he supports his teammates with excellent team slides, clears the ball, and makes our 10-man ride work when we bump him up field to play the clearing middie. He also dominates ground balls playing the wing on the faceoffs."

Offensive Player of the Week

Alec ConstableAlec Constable - Penfield

Penfield junior attackman Alec Constable has 31g-8a for the Patriots this year and his 4g-1a in Penfield`s 11-8 win against Irondequoit mad a big difference. Earlier in the season he had 3g-1a when the Patriots had a 9-8 win against West Genesee.

Head Coach John Schembri is a fan: "Alec is an extremely dedicated and hardworking player. He takes advantage of every opportunity to make himself and his teammates around him better. Whether it is attending early morning wall ball session in the offseason, his dedication in the weight room, and the classroom (94% academic average), his attendance at offseason team training sessions, his work with outside position specific coaches, and juggling a busy schedule of Penfield and Club team events. I could not be prouder to watch how his hard work and offseason investment is resulting in success on the field. "

Offensive Player of the Week

Connor Mesh

Connor Mesh - Spencerport

Connor Mesh is an "old-time" midfielder who can play anywhere on the field. He is currently 9th in faceoff wins (141) and 7th on sectional faceoff percentage (70%). He is second in ground ball production (178). He is also the leader in points for his team and has produced points in every game this season. In the McQuaid win he scored 4g-1a in their 9-5 win and he had two assists in the 8-6 win at Pittsford. In the last tree games he averaged 78% wins at the draw

Coach Bill Buttaro says: "Connor Mesh is an unbelievable leader for our entire program. He works hard, he is dedicated and he`s a great young man. In the era of specialization in lacrosse, Connor is a throwback player. He faces off, and he plays both offense and defense at a high level. Connor is rarely off the field and he always seems to make a play when we need it the most."
