Players of the Week - Group 1
Section V Boys Lacrosse Coordinator Mike Simon in conjunction with the Connors and Ferris law firm are, once again, sponsoring recognition of noteworthy performances throughout the season.
For "Group 1" we have two players who had standout performances in the first week and a half of the abbreviated 2021 season.
Offensive Player of the Week
Ryan Herod - Marcus Whitman
At the end of the first week and a half, Marcus Whitman senior Ryan Herod led the section in goals, assists and points with 23g-18a = 42pts. In the last eight seconds of the game, he scored the winning goal in the 8-7 Wildcat win over Wayne on May 7th, a team that they have only defeated once before (2012). In the game he was involved in five of the eight goals.
A significant player since his freshman year he currently has a career record of 83g-68a and 144gbs. He will be continuing to play lacrosse at Lynn University (Florida) playing in the Sunshine League as an NCAA Division II team.
Wildcat Head Coach Greg O`Connor says, "Ryan has been a well-balanced player on offense for us to start the year. He has made big plays in close games or when we need a spark. Ryan has also worked at making his teammates better."
Defensive Player of the Week
John Richiusa - Penfield
Penfield senior John Richiusa is one of several top faceoff specialists who will be looking for the top spot in that specialty and he had a remarkable start in the first week and a half. Against West Genesee from Section III, he won ninety-five percent (20/21) and then won all seven from Gates Chili. In the Churchville-Chili game he won ninety-one percent (21/23). Last Monday he won 23/27 in the overtime win against Pittsford. His current winning percentage is ninety-one percent. A Varsity player since his freshman year he has a current record of 295 wins.
John has committed to continue his education and playing days at NCAA Division I Canisius College.
Penfield Head Coach is rightfully proud of his player. "John dedication and work ethic in refining his craft is second to none. He is constantly looking for opportunities to improve and grow as a face-off specialist."
