Penn Yan Wins 23rd Title

Penn Yan won their 23rd Section Five Title tonight with an 8-6 win over Aquinas.  The Mustangs took an early 6-1 lead and held off the late advances by Aquinas.  The Little Irish scored five of the last seven goals to pull within two.  The  Final Aquinas goal was scored with 7:21 remaining and the final seven minutes were back and forth play with Penn Yan holding the ball and Aquinas trying to force their shots.

Penn Yan vs Aquinas FinalsJunior midfielder Conner Fingar finished tonight’s game with 2g-2a (9g-6a for the whole Tournament) and was named the Class B All Tournament MVP.  The Mustangs scored the first three goals of the game.  Fingar scored the opener with a sweep along the top with 8:20 remaining on the clock.  Fifteen seconds later, Dylan Stape scored on a face-off fast-break off a feed from Fingar.  The third goal was also a fast-break goal with Fingar scoring off a straight drive down the middle.  The Little Irish got on the board with Jonathan Parrinello scoring on a midrange shot.  The Mustangs added two more before the quarter expired.  Ayden Mowry (also named to All Tournament) scored off a feed from Fingar.  Mowry was on the crease and turned and buried the ball into the back of the net.  The first goal of the game that was neither scored or assisted by Fingar was scored with a single player drive as time expired in the half by Austin Blumbergs.  Penn Yan led 5-1 after 12 minutes.

Penn Yan vs Aquinas FinalsThey increased their lead to 6-1 (their largest of the game) with the opening goal of the second quarter.  Colton Smith scored with a drive from behind the cage.  Smith joined Fingar and Mowry on the All Tournament Team for Penn Yan’s offense.  Aquinas finished out the quarter with two goals of their own.  Casey Hochheimer scored the first off a feed from behind the cage by Eli Chalmers.  Both Chalmers and Hochhheimer made the All Tournament Team for Aquinas.  Chalmers assisted the second goal as well with a feed to Jake Reed.  Penn Yan led 6-3 at halftime.

Each team added a single goal in the third quarter.  Aquinas’ Cameron Cecere scored the Little Irish goal with a drive from the top.  The Mustangs scored another goal with 0:01 remaining on the clock.  This time Devon Gerhardt scored off a feed from Smith.  Smith set up behind the cage and drove for a goal along the right side.  After he was turned back, he quickly crossed to the left side and fed Gerhardt on the crease.  Penn Yan led 7-4 after three quarters.

Penn Yan scored their final goal with 10:16 remaining in the fourth quarter.  Blumbergs scored unassisted during a man-up goal.  The Little Irish responded with two back to back goals to end their scoring.  Both goals were scored by Hochheimer with the first assisted by Chalmers and the second assisted by Perrinello.  The final six minutes was back and forth with no scoring.

In the cage, both goalie had strong days.  Aquinas goalie John Peter Chinelly finished with 7 saves and Penn Yan goalie Jeff Kinyoun finished with 9 saves.  Both goalies were named to the All Tournament Team.  Defensively, senior Dakota Miller of Penn Yan was named to the Team.  From the Semi Finals, Haverling’s Jonathan Deats and Gananda’s Jake Rapp were both added to the list.  Penn Yan will move on to face the Section Six Champion in the first round of the State Tournament on June 2nd.
