Penfield Holds Lead to Defeat Eagles

Penfield scored the opening goal of the game and although Irondequoit tied the game three times, the Patriots never trailed.  Penfield played a strong offensive game and held possession for large chunks of time.  Their settled offense forced Irondequoit to rush when they did have the ball on offense.  Patrick Hynes was a defensive standout for the Eagles.  He repeatedly made saves that he had no business making and kept Irondequoit in the game.

The Patriots scored the opening two goals with scoring from Joey Barboza and Jack Cummings.  The Eagles came back with two of their own to tie the game at 2-2 with goals from Jack Brennan and Derek Onley.  Brennan finished with 5g and scored the final four goals for the Eagles.  The teams continued to trade goals to end the first quarter with the game tied 4-4.

In the second half, Penfield scored back to back goals to go back up by 2.  The first was scored off an inside feed by Dan Taddeo to Barboza on the crease.  Four minutes later and Matthew Schoeneck scored with an outside underhanded shot into the upper corner.  The Eagles scored the final goal of the first half.  Brennan was being locked off by the Patriots.  He cut around a pick to get the ball and then drove through his defender and the slide on the way to the goal.  He put the shot into the upper corner to score.  The Patriots led 6-5 at the half.

In the third quarter, Penfield added two goals while holding the Eagles scoreless.  The Patriots were on offense for a majority of the quarter and did not allow Irondequoit many chances at the goal.  Penfield’s Taddeo scored both goals.  The first was a drive from behind and the second was an inside feed from Cummings.  Penfield increased their lead to 8-5 after 36 minutes.

In the fourth quarter, Irondequoit scored the opening two goals to bring the game within one.  Brennan scored both goals.  The first was another drive through traffic and the second came off a bad bounce past the goalie.  Onley fed the ball into the crease and it bounced off Brennan and off the ground into the goal.  Penfield came back with two of their own.  Barboza scored off an inside feed from Andrew Powlin and then during the subsequent man-up opportunity, Taddeo scored off a feed from the crease line.  The final Eagle’s goal was scored with an outside shot by Brennan.  The final Patriot goal was scored on a semi-open goal.  Cody Calvert shot past Hynes as he dove back into the crease (Hynes was out attempting to double and get the ball back).

For the Patriots, Austin Hudson finished 11/19 at the draw.  Peter Schwab, Anthony DiPrima and Barboza each recorded four groundballs.
