Pal-Mac Defeats Wayne to Reach Class C Finals

- Top seeded Pal-Mac used multiple long runs of scoring to defeat fourth seeded Wayne 21-10 in the first of tonight’s two Class C Semi-Final games. The Red Raiders were led in scoring by Jackson Dennie (6g-4a). Reid Diehl (4g), Brandon Dennie (3g-1a), Luke VanGorden (3g-1a) also Pal-Mac vs Wayneadded multiple goals for Pal-Mac. For Wayne, Shane Coleman (3g-1a) and Tucker Eaton (4g) led in scoring. The Eagles’ goalie, Gavin Hamel, had an outstanding first quarter with 9 saves; he finished the game with 16 total saves.

Wayne came out of the gates with a mission and scored the first two goals. Eaton scored the opener with a bounce shot to the upper corner off a sweep across the top of the restraining line. Three minutes alter and Tas Strickland scored with a similar drive across the top. The Eagles led 2-0 with 5:03 left on the clock. Pal-Mac responded with the first of their four scoring streaks. This streak was four unanswered goals spanning the rest of the first quarter and into the early second quarter. The first Red Raider goal was scored by VanGorden on a face-off fast-break. After a slow Pal-Mac vs Waynestart to actually get possession, Branden Thomas came up with the ground ball and pressed the ball up field to VanGorden. He ran straight at the goal and put the Red Raiders on the scoreboard. Less than a minute later and the game was tied. J. Dennie scored his first goal after coming around from behind the cage. The final goal of the first quarter was another J. Dennie goal with an outside shot while a flag was down on the play.

Penalties were a major factor in the game and particularly the second quarter. The Eagles had a hard time staying out the box and as a result, Pal-Mac had multiple man-up attempts. They scored on multiple man-up attempts and flag down situations throughout the game. The first goal of the second half was another flag-down goal with Max Hill scoring his first goal of the night. Pal-Mac vs WayneThe next Wayne goal was scoring during 5-on-5 play with both teams in box. Coleman scoring with 10:55 left on the clock. On the next face-off with Pal-Mac back on man-up, they scored another face-off fast-break goal with VanGorden assisting Diehl. This followed with two more man-up goals for Pal-Mac with outside shots by Hill and Branden Thomas. The Red Raiders kept up the pressure with another two goals, one from B. Dennie and one from J. Dennie. After their second multi-goal streak, Pal-Mac led 9-3.

Both teams added one more goal to before halftime. Coleman scored for Wayne with an inside dodge from behind and Diehl scored off an inside feed from B. Dennie. The Red Raiders led 10-4, going into the break.

The third quarter continued with the scoring runs by Pal-Mac with another four-goal run halfway through the quarter. Wayne started off the scoring with an unassisted outside shot by Eaton. Pal-Mac responded with four of their own: a pair from J. Dennie, one from Diehl and one from VanGorden. Coleman’s final goal was scored with 4:15 left on the clock with a drive along the left goalie line. Pal-Mac’s fifteenth goal was another fast-break with B. Dennie Pal-Mac vs Waynescoring unassisted. Both teams added one more goal before the end of the third quarter. Wayne’s Mason Michel scored with an outside shot from top and VanGorden added his third with a similar shot for the Red Raiders. Pal-Mac led 16-8 going into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Pal-Mac started off with a five-goal run. Diehl, Max, J. Dennie and B. Dennie each added a goal. The last Pal-Mac goal was scored by Ryan Allen. Allen’s goal was a hard-fought goal on the crease, where he fought for the loose ball before finishing into the back of the net. The last Pal-Mac goal was scored with 7:22 left on the clock. The Eagles added two more before the end of the game with Eaton scoring off a drive straight at the cage and Strickland scoring man-up with an assist from Coleman.
