# 1740  Thursday: Penfield and Penn Yan Win

There were a number of big games played under wet conditions on Thursday. Penfield avenged an earlier loss to Fairport in a Monroe County game and Penn Yan used two over time periods to beat Canandaigua in Finger Lakes play. Schroeder was a one goal winner against Rush Henrietta and HFL won a big Class B win against Brighton.

Unlike the first game, this time Fairport took control early in the game, ending the first quarter with a 6-2 lead and ending the game at 13-7.

After a 4-4 tie at the start of the the fourth quarter, Brighton scored two goals. Geneva brought the scored to within one with less than a minute, but the Barons held on.

Thomas was the overtime winner 10-9 in their game at HFL. Fairport was the 9-3 winner at Irondequoit and Aquinas was the 8-3 winner in GRALL action.

Penfield, Schroeder and Fairport have now proved the idea that parity is alive and well in the Monroe County Class A teams. In other close games today, Brockport beat Athena/Odyssey by one goal as did Aquinas in their game with McQuaid Jesuit.

For the most part it was cross-over day in Section Five. McQuaid Jesuit lost to St. Francis of Buffalo and Rush-Henrietta beat visiting Livonia. The rest of the games were league games with non-divisional teams.

After a tough vacation week schedule that included a win against Canandaigua and a loss to Penn Yan, Fairport finished vacation week with a dramatic 10-7 win over Corning East of Section 4. In other games Geneva lost a close game to Section 3 powerhouse CNS, Penn Yan beat Shenendehowa 10-2 and Schroeder beat Hamburg of Section 6 with a score of 12-3.

There were six games played on Thursday during vacation week. Defense was the name of the game at Penn Yan where the Mustangs scored the game winner in the last minute of the game. Canandaigua won by a goal at Irondequoit and Geneva scored three goals in last quarter to beat McQuaid Jesuit.

There were nine games scheduled for Tuesday. Schroeder was a 14-7 winner over host Irondequoit. Eastridge won its first game of the season. R-H was the winner in their close game with McQuaid Jesuit and Penn Yan beat Carthage.

The pre-game question asked if the strength of the Schroeder offense would be contained by the power of the Penn Yan defense. At the end of the second overtime the question could have been reversed, and it was Penn Yan 5-4. In other games Brighton took Victor and Aquinas took Waterloo.

Churchville scored the only goal in the first quarter when junior attackman Ben Rossignolo scored at 4:40 on a pass from junior middie Brian Traugott. At the start of the second quarter Spencerport's senior middie, Tyler Hintz scored the first of his three goals at 9:10 to tie the scored at one. The Saints went ahead at 8:27 when Rossignolo scored (unassisted), but that would be their last goal until the final quarter as the Rangers scored the next seven goals at game played at Monroe Community College.

The County coaches recently announced the list of all stars for 2005. Pittsford attackman,Jake Boyce, Penfield midfielderMike Thon and Webster Schroeder midfielder,Mike Catalino were named to the All America team. Brighton senior attackman,James Ryan was named Academic All American.

Fairport won another close one, this time against Rush-Henrietta, Geneva was the winner against Victor, Spencerport won a close one against Churchville-Chili and McQuaid Jesuit won their last GRALL contest, making them Co-Champions with Aquinas. Schroeder took a win from Irondequoit and five other games were played today.

The rematch of HF-L and Brighton drew attention tonight and the Cougars again were the victors, but in a closer game than back in early April. McQuaid Jesuit won another game by a single goal, as did Victor in their game with Waterloo. Canandaigua's Head Coach John Johnson won his 350th game. Ten other games were played in Section Five on Thursday.

It was a full day of lacrosse under cloudy but warm skies. Fairport won a close game against vi sting Irondequoit, and Gates has a one goal victory in the battle of the Chilis. Hilton won in overtime, but there were a number of blowouts as Canandaigua, Penn Yan, Geneva and Penfield each had easy wins.

Mid 50 degree weather and bright sunshine dominated and the fans were winners today as 12 games were played by Section Five teams. Waterloo won another OT game in their 9-8 win over Waterloo. Newark played Midlakes to an 8-6 win and Aquinas won a close game with McQuaid Jesuit on their new turf field.

# 1568  Section Five All Tournament Team Selections- 2004

The 2004 Section Five Tournaments are over and the Champions have been determined. An All-Tournament Team is selected for each Class Tournament. The MVP for Class A was junior attackman, Aaron Manzer of Canandaigua. In Class B the MVP was Brighton's, junior attackman, Mike Ryerson. In Class C the MVP was senior attackman, Kyle Eakens of Penn Yan.

# 1540  Class B Champions: BRIGHTON

 St. John Fisher College. Brighton held the number four position entering the Class B Tournament and after beating the top seed, HFL 15-11 on Thursday, the Barons used an overtime goal by MVP and junior attackman, Mike Ryerson to win their first Section Five Class B Championship, 6-5.
