Saturday: Penn Yan in Overtime

The pre-game question asked if the strength of the Schroeder offense would be contained by the power of the Penn Yan defense. At the end of the second overtime the question could have been reversed, and it was Penn Yan 5-4. In other games Brighton took Victor and Aquinas took Waterloo.

reddot Defense was certainly the name of the game in the highly touted Schroeder at Penn Yan game, played this afternoon at the new turf field at Penn Yan Academy.

The game, played under sunny skies and cool temperatures, was a study in defense, with the Mustangs controlling a great deal of the ball time as a result of their stellar defensive unit that generally cleared the ball with quick pitches from junior goalie RK Wickham and the fast foot speed of defensemen Manley and Keas along with the Mustang middies.

With the ball in the Schroeder defensive end, the Warriors played great defense that had been generally "less noticed" in light of the strong offensive players.

Senior goalie Dennis Costanza played an exceptional game, recording 23 saves for Schroeder and close defenseman, Drew Palmer played a great game against Mustang senior attackman Dan McGuffie who was uncharacteristically held to a single assist. Other starting defensemen including Tim Winslow and Eric Horeth along with LSM Chris Nicodemi and short stick defensive middie John Pawluk kept the Mustang offense from feeding the inside and made it difficult to penetrate the perimeter.

Penn Yan, however, used its powerful defensive unit to gain access to ball time. Their quickness and aggressive attacks on the offense secured many turnovers, and Wickham (9 saves) made a number of critical saves that he converted into quick clears for the Mustangs.

As for the scoring, the only goal in the first quarter came from Schroeder's Grant Catalino with 0:09 left. The Warriors scored the second goal of the game at 10:52 when senior attackman Eric Chavoustie scored on a pass from sophomore attackman Mike Tota. Penn Yan came back at 4:53 with an unassisted goal by senior midfielder Dan Mesler, but Webster returned with another goal by Chavoustie (assisted by Catalino) with 0:19 left in the half and with Webster up 3-1.

The majority of the third quarter, like the half before it, was played by the defense and a lot of running up and down the field. Junior middie, Steven Carlson scored at the 4:57 mark with an unassisted goal. Schroeder returned on the next face off scoring what would be their last goal of the game when Tota scored on a feed from Chris Topping at 4:35. Penn Yan brought the score to within one when Mesler scored on a feed from McGuffie at 3:57 and the third quarter ended with Webster up 4-3.

With the tension at the highest levels, both teams showed patience on their offensive ends of the field, taking as much time as possible while holding on to the ball. Carlson tied the game for the Mustangs with a bounce shot on his drive from out front at 2:36 and although both teams took last minute shots, the game was sent into overtime.

Usually teams are looking for a volume of shots in overtime, as this first goal wins the game. In this game, however, the Mustangs, who had most of the offensive ball time took their time, looking for the right shot. With 0:04 left in the first overtime, junior attackman Ben Odell drove to the goal, shooting the ball past Costanza, but was called for being the in the crease, and the goal was not counted.

Odell was not to be deigned however and at the 2:36 mark in the second overtime period, scored an unassisted goal for the Penn Yan 5-4 victory. Penn Yan improves their record to 5-1 and Schroeder drops to 4-1.

Brighton scored the next five goals to increase their lead to 9-2. Victor came back with 3 goals of their own and the Barons scored one additional goal before the half for a 10 -5 lead.

Aquinas then took the lead for good with Berkompas’ second goal and one scored by Nick Vincent with an assist from Pincelli. Aquinas ended the first quarter up 4-2.

Both teams scored four goals in the second quarter and Aquinas led at the half 8-6. The second half, however was all Aquinas as they scored six goals while holding the Indians scoreless.
