Week In Review - Week 5

EDITOR'S NOTE: This weekly summary touches on some of the games played in the recent past and highlights some games of interest in the current week. For more in-depth coverage, click on the DAY OF THE WEEK for more coverage for that day, including box scores, articles, and galleries.

There were forty-five games played last week. There are seventy-three out of section games scheduled and 39 have been played. Section V teams have won 27 and lost 12 (69% wins). There are four undefeated teams at this point: Bloomfield-Honeoye (6-0), Canandaigua (8-0), Pal-Mac (8-0), and Pittsford (7-0).

Looking Back

With the vacation over, the lacrosse schedule intensified, with forty-five games played. Both Canandaigua and Penn Yan entered their Saturday matchups undefeated, but only the Gray Wolves preserved their perfect record. Meanwhile, Midlakes faced its first defeat of the season against Pal-Mac, which maintained its spotless record.

Bri at RHMonday featured two matchups, each decided by more than three goals. HFL dominated Marcus Whitman 17-3, securing its fifth consecutive win behind standout performances from Goodberlet and Arena, who each netted five goals. Jokl Bri controlled faceoffs at RH, while Bennett and Blythe impressed in goal. Batavia-Notre Dame earned an 8-4 victory over Newfane, with Gavynn Trippany leading all scorers with three goals, complemented by two from Harold Mellander and strong efforts from goalies James Rachow and Branden Flanagan. HFL will face Brockport next, while Batavia-Notre Dame prepares to take on Midlakes.

Victor at SchroederTuesday saw a packed schedule with 16 games, including three dramatic contests that went down to the wire. Hilton secured a 15-13 win over Rush-Henrietta after holding off a late surge, thanks to Drew Brien’s four-goal effort and a dominant faceoff performance from Drew O’Buck. Canandaigua edged out Spencerport 13-12 in a hard-fought battle, marking Coach Deven York’s 100th career victory. Irondequoit narrowly defeated Thomas 9-8, powered by Kieran Stenzel’s hat trickOther matchups saw commanding performances from Pittsford, McQuaid Jesuit, and Pal-Mac, which extended its perfect run to 7-0.

On Wednesday, the Players of the Week were announced: Cooper Moore (Irondequoit), Will Johnson (Victor), and Will Thompson (Penn Yan) were honored for their outstanding performances.

.Westhill at Penn Yan Thursday featured 11 games, five of which were decided by thrilling finishes. Penn Yan held off Brighton’s late rally to secure an 11-10 victory, while McQuaid Jesuit outlasted Marcellus 19-18 in a high-scoring showdown fueled by AJ Quagrello’s stellar performance. Penfield edged out Spencerport 10-9, mounting an impressive second-quarter comeback. Thomas maintained its winning streak against Hamburg with an 8-7 victory, and Mynderse-Romulus defeated Haverling 12-9 behind Griffin Hilimire’s milestone night. Other decisive results included Victor’s dominant 18-5 win over Schroeder and Wayne’s 15-7 triumph over Gananda.

Friday showcased two contests, one of them a nail-biter. Pittsford narrowly topped Fairport 6-5 in a thrilling league matchup, led by Avery Valenti’s three goals and a strong showing from Fairport’s Jack Gosiewski, who scored twice. Hilton at RHGoalies Bear Wehrheim and Luke Ryan delivered standout performances with save rates above 60%, while Corey Roeser controlled face-offs for Fairport, winning ten of fourteen. Despite Fairport’s late push, Pittsford remained undefeated. Geneva claimed a commanding 13-3 non-league victory over Essex, with Max Heieck and Alex Pesante leading the charge and goalie Brent Williams boasting an impressive 85% save rate.

Saturday capped off the week with 14 games, including two close battles. Penfield edged Irondequoit 10-9 in a fiercely contested match, led by Jake Maurer and Harrison Easton, who each scored three goals. Marcus Whitman narrowly defeated Bishop Kearney 13-12, thanks to standout performances from Ayden Clark and Tariku Blueye, who both tallied five goals. Several other matchups ended in dominant victories.

Looking Ahead

Forty-two games are scheduled for the upcoming week, promising plenty of action on the field.

Monday will see six matchups, including East United/Eastridge at Gates Chili and Churchville-Chili at Brighton. Bishop Kearney plays its second game of the season at Midlakes.

Tuesday also features six games, highlighted by Mynderse-Romulus visiting Newark.

BK at MWWednesday brings eleven exciting contests, including HFL at Canandaigua, Orchard Park at Aquinas, and Haverling at Batavia-Notre Dame. Fans will also keep an eye on Schroeder at Brighton and Irondequoit at Pittsford.

Thursday has only three games, with The Pride facing off against Pal-Mac.

Friday’s five matchups include Corning at Brighton, Aquinas at Hilton, and Fairport at Spencerport.

Saturday rounds out the week with eleven games, featuring some marquee matchups: JD at Victor, Wayne at Mynderse-Romulus, and Penn Yan at Lake Shore.
