2025 Preview: Waterloo

Revitalized Program Ready for Success

The Waterloo Tigers are gearing up for an exhilarating lacrosse season as they make their return to the varsity ranks. WaterlooNew Head Coach Walt Bennett expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "We are excited to return to the varsity ranks this year with a group of players who have had the opportunity to be playing lacrosse for a long time." This comeback is particularly significant given the program's recent struggles, which Bennett attributes to a lapse in the youth program during the early 2000s. However, thanks to the efforts of the Community Center and dedicated parents around 2015, the youth program was revitalized, setting the stage for the Tigers' current success.

Strong Defensive Foundation

In 2025, Waterloo boasts a strong defensive foundation with senior goalie Berg Aunkst-Park, whose high lacrosse IQ and extensive game experience make him a key player. Freshman Seth Kinne will serve as his backup and also contribute to the attack as needed. Juniors Zion Trout and Logan Jones, the team's most experienced defensemen, continue to improve each year. They will be joined by a talented group of athletic defensemen, including sophomore Mason O'Connell and freshmen Max Marquart and Xavior Brown, who will compete for positions at long pole and long stick midfield.

Experienced and Talented Offense

WaterlooOn the offensive end, the Tigers have a mix of skilled upperclassmen and promising underclassmen. Senior Caden Shangraw, senior Justin Knowlton, and junior Walter Bennett will lead the charge in the short stick positions. Unfortunately, the team will be without senior Kyle Shangraw, who is out for the season due to a knee injury sustained in football, and senior Brandon Lee, who has chosen to forego his senior lacrosse season.

Future Stars to Watch

The future of the program hinges on the development of the younger players, who will be crucial for sustained success. Sophomores Nicholas Dorn, Nathan Disanto-Simon, and Jackson Worden, along with freshmen Drake Alger, Trevor Trumble, and Jaidyn Ellison, are expected to make a significant impact this season.

As the Tigers prepare to showcase their talents in Section V lacrosse, the excitement and anticipation are palpable. With a blend of experienced leaders and eager newcomers, Waterloo is poised for a memorable and successful season.
