2025 Preview: Batavia-Notre Dame
A New Chapter Begins
As the 2025 lacrosse season approaches, the Batavia-Notre Dame Boys Lacrosse team is gearing up with renewed hope and determination after a challenging 2024 season. The team, competing in Class C, ended the previous year with a record of 0-16, losing all their games by a margin of over 5 goals. Despite this, the upcoming season promises a fresh start under the guidance of their new head coach, John Petry.
Challenges from the Past Year
In 2024, the team's performance highlighted several areas for improvement. They scored a total of 54 goals with an average of 3.4 goals per game, while conceding 267 goals, averaging 16.7 goals against per game. The team also saw the departure of four key seniors: Quintin Cummings (A/M - #4), Eli Michalak (A/M - #3), Hunter Mileham (D - #23), and Patrick Suozzi (M - #8). These losses have left gaps in both the offense and defense that the team will need to address.
Returning Strengths and Rising Stars
Despite the challenges, the team has a strong core of returning players. Seven seniors are expected to lead the team, alongside eight juniors and one sophomore. The team will look to build on the experience and skills of these players. Notably, returning senior Jon Smith (D/LSM) had 5 goals and 5 assists last year, while Gavyn Trippany (A/G) added 6 goals and 4 assists. The returning players accounted for 39% of the total goals and 60% of the total assists from the previous year. This experience will be invaluable as the team aims to turn their fortunes around.
The Road Ahead
The upcoming season will be pivotal for Batavia-Notre Dame. With Coach John Petry at the helm, the team is preparing for a fresh start. Petry brings new strategies and a revitalized spirit to the team. He coached box lacrosse 2009 - 2019 for the Tonawanda Braves on the Tonawanda Reservation in Basom, NY and then started with Batavia in 2015 as a volunteer doing stats and filming games. In 2017 he became the modified assistant coach and in 2020 he became a varsity assistant. His leadership will be crucial in fostering a competitive and resilient mindset among the players.
The Key to Success
For the Batavia-Notre Dame Boys Lacrosse team, the key to success in the 2025 season will be a combination of teamwork, perseverance, and strategic play. The team's ability to adapt and grow under the new coaching staff will determine their performance on the field. With a dedicated group of returning players and a coach committed to building a strong foundation, the team is poised to make significant strides this season.
As the Batavia-Notre Dame Boys Lacrosse team embarks on this new chapter, the entire community will be watching and cheering them on, hoping for a season filled with growth, victories, and memorable moments.
