HFL Wins in Double Overtime for Second Championship in 3 Years

Wayne vs HFLAfter finishing as the runner-up last season, HFL came back to win their second Section Five Title in 3 years with a double overtime 9-8 win over Wayne.  This was the first double overtime Finals matchup since Victor over Thomas in 2018.  The Cougars' Chase Perryman scored the game winner with 2:59 left in the second overtime period.  Perryman was named the Class B Tournament MVP and finished the game with 4g-2a. 

The game was a story of streaks, with both teams scoring off runs and holding the opponents scoreless.  The matchup was also extremely defensive with both teams holding their own on defense.  HFL senior defenseman Donnell Hall and Wayne senior defenseman Jared Gammill were both named to the All-Tournament Team after exceptional performances during today’s contest.  In the cage, HFL's Trevor Reese finished with 5 saves and Wayne’s Dylan Coene finished with 6 saves. Reese was named to the All-Tournament Team in the cage.

Wayne vs HFLIn the first quarter, both teams added two goals. Wayne struck first with Alex Garrow scoring with a drive down the middle.  Garrow finished with 1g-2a and was named to the All-Tournament Team.  Just over a minute later, HFL scored a garbage goal with Perryman grabbing the loose ball 6 feet out from the crease. HFL took their first lead of the game at 4:27 remaining with a slow break.  Grady Goodberlet fed the ball into the center crease were long-stick Owen Smith finished into the back of the net.  Wayne tied the game with 2:32 remaining.  PJ Ostrowski fed the ball into Izak Krajeski.  The game was tied 2-2 after 12 minutes.

In the second quarter, Wayne took over, scoring 3 and holding the Cougars to 1.  Ostrowski added his first goal of the game with 10:16 remaining to take back the 3-2 lead.  HFL tied the game for the third straight time with Perryman assisting sophomore Matthew Brassie.  The Screaming Eagles scored the last two goals of the quarter to pull ahead.  Both goals were assisted by Garrow.  The first was scored by Louis Profetta and the second was scored by Mason Michel.  Michel, a sophomore, was also named to the All-Tournament Team.  The Screaming Eagles led 5-3 going into halftime.

Wayne vs HFLIn the third quarter, HFL fought back and took over their own two goal lead.  HFL scored three straight goals to take their second lead of the game.  Perryman scored two goals, the first during a broken clear off a feed from Michel.  Patrick Donahoe scored the third goal with a drive from the top.  HFL led 6-5 with 4:03 left in the third quarter.  Wayne scored their lone goal of the quarter on the next draw.  Profetta assisted Michel with a hard press down the field off the draw.  The goal was only 8 seconds after Perryman’s goal.  HFL finished out the quarter with back to back goals to go up by two.  Both goals were scored by Goodberlet and both were scored on broken clears.  The first was assisted by Perryman and the second was assisted by Braydn Trybuskiewicz.  Goodberlet, an eighth grader, was the youngest member of the All-Tournament Team.

The fourth quarter was all Wayne.  The Screaming Eagles added two goals while holding the Cougars scoreless.  The HFL scoring drought went from the third quarter into the second overtime period (over 17 minutes total).  Ostrowski scored the first goal (with 11:06 remaining) off a feed from behind the cage from Michel.  With 7:06 remaining, Wayne tied the game at 8-8.  Profetta scored unassisted with a drive across the top.

Wayne vs HFLIn the first overtime, both teams had a chance on offense.  Wayne won the opening draw with a timeout to secure their win.  They had the first opportunity at the cage.  Their shot hit a pipe and rebounded across the midfield line.  HFL got the ball and called timeout.  The Cougar’s first attempt at the cage was stopped with a take from Gammill that gave Wayne the ball back behind the cage.  The Screaming Eagles failed the clear and HFL had a second chance.  However, they could not capitalize.  Wayne got the ball back and cleared the ball up field.  They had two more chances at the cage but could not get the goal.

Wayne vs HFLThe second overtime started with HFL winning the draw.  They took the ball down the left side and worked it around the cage.  Perryman’s game winning goal with scored off a feed from sophomore Matthew Brassie with 2:59 left on the clock. 

Rounding out the All-Tournament Team was Brydn Trybuskiewicz (HFL), PJ Ostrowski (Wayne), Keagan Hoestery (Pal-Mac), and Max Heieck (HFL).  HFL moves on to the first round of the States on Saturday at 3:00 at Fisher.
