Saturday: Akron vs Penn Yan 10:00 AM

Penn Yan vs AkronFirst up is the Class D game where Akron will play Penn Yan at 10:00.

The Tigers come into this game with a 12-3 record and a four-game winning streak. In their last game, with Salamanca, they posted a 22-18 win. Senior captain Travis Fry scored 8g-4a and sophomore attackman Brale Abrams added 6g. Fry has scored 71 goals this season and Abrams has scored 58g. Sophomore goalie Dayton Ruppel had 18s (50%) in the last game and has made 94s (55%) this year.

Penn Yan enters the game at 12-7 and, as usual, has played some very competitive teams at much larger schools, all in preparation for the elevated level of play in the tournaments. With just a few seniors on the starting lineup, led by goalie Griffin Emerson, who with 753 minutes in the cage this year has made 141 saves (59%). Freshman Teagan Fingar leads in offensive production with 43g-23a and junior Carter Earl has 36g-20a. Five others have over twenty points each.

Both teams played against Clarence, the Class A champion from Section VI. Penn Yan lost their game 8-6 in early May, where Emerson posted 14s (64%) and Teagan Fingar scored 4g. Akron played the Red Devils the week before and lost 18-9, with Fry scoring 5g-1a and Abrams adding 2g-1a. Ruppel only played seven minutes in the game.

The Tigers will have some difficulty contending with the multiple scoring threats and the surprising high level of discipline that the young Mustangs exhibit, and Penn Yan will need to slow down the many shots that Akron likes to take.

Saturday: Clarence vs Fairport 12:30 PM

Clarence vs FairportIn the second game of the quarter finals, the Class A game will feature Clarence vs Fairport at 12:30.

Clarence comes into this game with a record of 15-3 and with a 15-game winning streak. They lost their first three games, one of which was against Thomas who defeated them 18-2.  Since then, only three teams have scored ten or more points and often score a lot to a little. They have scored 229 (12.7 ave) points while allowing 126 (7 ave).

The red Devils have five players with over twenty points. Leading the list is Tommy Campbell with 34g-47a and Matt Slowinski with 53g-23a. Jake Stevens has 48g-18a and Nick Yemma has 21g-25a. All four are seniors. Jack Scherrer, also a senior, is the goalie with most minutes (653) and he has made 110s (52%).

Fairport enters the game at 16-3 and has a nine-game winning streak. The Red Raiders have seven players with twenty or more points. Jackson Monte has 31g-18a, Kyle Gould has 39g-9a, Billy Meagher has 22g-15a, and Mitchell Monte has 21g-10a. Fairport has outscored their opponents 195-99 and end up with a great deal of ball-time with faceoff specialist Joey Giggie, who has gone 226-89 (72%) this year and was the tournament MVP in Class A. Senior goalie McLean Ralston has made 125s (59%).

Clarence lost to Hamburg in their first game of the season (11-10) and Fairport also played Hamburg, beating them 12-4. The Red Devils beat Orchard Park 8-4 and Fairport beat the Quakers 13-6.

The Red Raiders will need to slow down the strong senior shooters and get a good number of their own shots on goal. The Red Devils will need to contend with Giggie and the numerous scoring threats.

Saturday: Hamburg vs Canandaigua 3:00 PM

Hamburg vs CanandaiguaIn the third game of the quarter finals, the Class B game will see Hamburg vs Canandaigua at 3:00.

The Bulldogs have a record of 12-4 as they enter this game and they have won their last four games.  Of their four losses, three came from Section V teams. Although they beat Brighton 7-5 in early April, they lost to Thomas 8-5, lost to Pittsford 5-3, and lost to Fairport 12-4.

Stats for the Bulldogs are sparse, but leaders appear to be seniors Dylan Collins 18g-13a (9 games), Carson Kummer 18g-10a (8 games) and Dylan Collins 14g-6a (7 games). Goalie time seems to be split between junior Derek Benningfield (55% in 9 games), and junior Lukasz Barmosz (74% in 8 games).

Canandaigua enters the game at 14-5 and have won their last three. The Braves have five players with over twenty points. Senior midfielder Elliot Morgan has 28g-16a, Jaxon Grant has 28g-10a, and Drew Williamee has 17g-15a. Luke McCrobie is a faceoff midfielder, who although missing some games due to injury is back and has 123 wins (64%). In the championship game he went 12 of 14 (86%). In the cage, junior Jack Faiola is a 60% goalie and made 6s (67%) in the championship game.

Hamburg beat Brighton 7-5 in early April while the Braves beat the Bruins 9-2. The Bulldogs lost to Thomas 8-5 and the Braves beat them 11-8. Hamburg lost to Pittsford 5-3 and the Braves lost to the Panthers 7-2. Hamburg lost to Fairport 12-4 and CA won their contest 9-5.

Some of the best teams from Section V were able to best the Bulldogs during the regular season, but the Hamburg has outscored their opponents 47-8 in their last three games. The Braves will need McCrobie to get them ball time, and their offensive unit will need to put goals on the cage and their own goalie will need to continue to step up.

Saturday: Lake Shore vs Pal-Mac 5:30 PM

Lake Shore vs Pal-MacIn the last game of the quarter finals, the Class C game will see Lake Shore vs Pal-Mac at 5:30.

The Eagles enter this game at 18-1, with their only loss, by one goal to Canisius (7-6). They have since won eight games. To date they have outscored their opponents 306 to 107.

Lake Shore has eight players with twenty or more points and four with seventy-five or more. Topping that list are two players with eighty points each.  Junior attackman Obrigh Tallchief has 51g-29a and senior Joiise John has 39g-41a. Sophomore Ray Cortez has 65g-10a and junior Blayze Becker has 46g-29a. The team has scored 472 points in their nineteen games (24 ppg). Freshman goalie Damien Warrior has the most time in the goal and has made 142s (59%). Joiise John (66%) and junior Korban Bonafede (54%) split most of the faceoffs.

Pal-Mac enters the game at 15-1 having only lost to Irondequoit early in the season. They are on a twelve-game winning streak. Like the Eagles, the Red Raiders are a high scoring team with 378 points (24 ppg). Their game starts with their senior faceoff specialist Quinn Nolan, who has won 256 draws (87%), leads the team in ground balls with 259 and has scored 41g-23a. There is much more to the Red Raiders as five others have over twenty points this season. Junior Mike Halsey has 19g-45a, Keagan Hoesterey has 25g-36a, Logan Babcock has 41g-14a, Riley Lich has 27g-16a and Damian Knaak has 27g-5a. Senior goalie Will Nichols has made 101s (61%).

Lake Shore did not play outside of the Buffalo area and the teams have no common opponents. Nolan is used to being a target and yet, he needs to have a good day in order to reduce the number of shots that the Eagles are used to getting. Pal-Mac will need to get used to the speed at which the Eagles play. Lakes Shore will need to match up with a number of shooters from Pal-Mac.
