Thomas over Canandaigua 7-5
Wednesday: DAY IN REVIEW: The only game that was close today was the one the everyone was talking about all season, as two undefeated teams met and only one would continue with the possibility of a perfect season. In the end, Webster Thomas scored four goals in the final quarter to score a 7-5 victory over Canandaigua.
It was billed as one of the must-see games of the regular season and the teams did not disappoint as Thomas scored four goals in the fourth quarter to remain undefeated after their 7-5 victory over Canandaigua. The Braves scored the first two goals, the first at 9:50 when Spin Blazak scored from the outside and the second at 8:56 from Jaxon Grant. Although it seemed like the Braves were in control, Thomas came back at 1:34 with a pass from Joe Russo to David Petz. The first quarter ended with Canandaigua up 2-1.
At 9:41 Evan Pashalidis tied the game at 2-2 with a crease shot after receiving the ball from Chase Gottstein. A little less than two minutes later, Thomas took their first lead in the game when at 7:24 Nathan Hoban sent the ball to the crease where Russo scored again. The Titan lead did not last long as Sam Bennett scored from the right wing and the score was tied at 3-3 as the half ended. It certainly felt like Canandaigua had a majority of the ball time in the first half, but they seemed reluctant to take outside shots against Ethan Ruller, one of the top goalies in the section. Thomas was more willing to take shots and had more shots on Canandaigua sophomore goalie Jack Faiola.
The Braves came out of the break and immediately took the lead from the initial faceoff when Bennett picked up the ball and ran straight toward the cage and scored with an outside bounce shot. It was the only goal scored and the quarter ended with Canandaigua up 4-3.
Thomas tied early in the last quarter when Hoban scored from the right wing. On the next faceoff Canandaigua long stick Jackson Nieman picked up the loose ball and ran toward the Titan goal, dishing it off at the last minute to Bennett who scored at 10:16. The goal gave the Braves a 5-4 lead, but it was their last goal in the game as Thomas scored the next three unanswered goals. Gottstein scored on a sweep right at 8:29, Russo scored on a drive from behind the cage at 6:20 and after Thomas broke a Canandaigua clear, Pashalidis scored the final goal at 1:59. Thomas was able to keep the ball away from Canandaigua for the rest of the game.
Ethan Ruller certainly made a difference in this Titan win, and the Titan ten-man ride allowed them some important ball time. The Canandaigua defense did a good job as well, protecting Faiola who made 8 saves (53%) for the Braves (10-1). Thomas remains undefeated at 10-0 and will take on Victor on Friday.
