Lecture on Stick Making at U of R

JacquesAn unusual opportunity to learn about the art of traditional lacrosse stick making is available to the Section Five community on November 28th at the University of Rochester.

As part of the University's Native American Heritage Month, Alfie Jacques will explain how wooden lacrosse sticks are crafted. Mr. Jacques, who, along with his late father Louis, is considered the world authority on traditional stick making. Louis was inducted into the Canadian Hall of Fame in 1999. Alfie was a standout player at LaFayette High School in the early 1960's and has also been a coach.

The sticks, made from hickory, are shaped, dried, streamed for over a year before the netting, made from leather and rawhide, are attached. Their sticks have been used in box lacrosse and field lacrosse as well since the 1960's.
