Tuesday: Section Five Sweeps Western Regionals
All three Section Five teams defeated the champions form Section Six today at Canisius College in Buffalo. Irondequoit was first up with a 3:30 game in Class B and they won 8-4 over Hamburg who finish their season at 17-3. Aquinas (Class C) was the 14-11 winner over Silver Creek who end their season at 17-2. In Class A, Fairport defeated Orchard Park 10-5 who finish their season at 16-2.

-- Irondequoit scored the long goal in the first quarter and after a 2-2 tie, scored six goals in the second half on their way to an 8-4 New York State quarter final victory over Section Six Class B Champion, Hamburg in the first game of the day at Canisius College in Buffalo.
After almost seven minutes in the first quarter with no score, Mike Utz scored the first of his five goals with a man up goal and an assist from Nick Doktor. The quarter ended with the Eagles up 1-0.
Doktor started off the scoring in the second quarter with an unassisted goal on a drive from behind the goal, but Hamburg returned with their first goal of the game when Shawn Needham, with his long stick, cleared the ball and took the ball right to the goal, scoring with 3:34 left in the half. The Bulldogs tied the game with 1:13 on the clock with two men up as Ryan Feuerstein hit Adam Dings on the right. The teams were tied at 2-2 for the half-time break.
After a controversial pushing call, Irondequoit scored another in man up when Greg Coholan threw a skip pass to Utz who put the ball past Hamburg goalie James Maxwell. Less than a minute later, Hamburg forced another tied when Ryan Feuerstein scored an unassisted goal from up top. Utz scored again, on a drive and a shot while falling to give the Eagles a 4-3 lead which lasted almost three minutes. Hamburg tied it back up again on shot by Ryan Jurek but Irondequoit scored the last goal of the quarter when Coholan found Ian Brooks cutting to the goal. The Eagles were ahead 5-4 after three quarters.
After five scoreless minutes, Utz scored two more within a minutes period. The first, unassisted on a sweep and hard side arm and the second with an assist from Emmy Poccia behind the cage. Doktor scored an open net goal with 5:41 left in the game when Hamburg pulled their goalie for a double. Although Hamburg had an extra man opportunity, they failed to score and the game ended with an 8-4 victory for Irondequoit. The Eagles will travel to Syracuse on Thursday, for their Class B semi final game against Section III Champion, Jamesville-DeWitt. The game will be at Cicero-North Syracuse High School at 3:30.

-- For the first time ever, The Section Five Class C champion was not Penn Yan, but Aquinas, who continued Section Five's unbeaten streak with a 14-11 win over Silver Creek in the second game at the Canisius College Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo. Junior attackman Klay Heston was on fire, scoring six goals and adding three assists for Aquinas.
Silver Creek scored first with a drive by Cam Seneca from the left. Brendan Hall tied the game with 6:45 left on a feed from Austin Gorman who was behind the cage. After a broken clear, Zed Williams found Zack Williams in fast break to give the Black Knights another lead, but Gorman tied the game at 2-2 with 4:34 left in the quarter. A minute and a half later Silver Creek took another lead with another Zack to Zed Williams goal. Aquinas added three more in the quarter giving the L' il Irish a 5-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. Klay Heston found Gorman for the first goal and Heston scored the second after receiving the ball from Gorman who won the ensuing face off. With thirty-five second left Anthony Bianchi scored on a feed from Gorman behind the cage.
The second quarter belonged to the Black Knights who scored four unanswered goals which gave them a 7-5 lead at the half time break. Zack Williams scored the first one (unassisted) and Levi Jones added the second (unassisted) less than a minute later. John Jimerson had a nice feed from behind the cage to Zack Williams who quick-sticked the ball past the AQ goalie. The last goal was scored with less than a second left on the clock when Zack Williams scored (unassisted), after picking up a ground ball in front of the cage.
Aquinas tied the game once more, scoring two goals about thirty seconds apart with about eight minutes left in the third quarter. Heston found Jake Vogl for the first and Heston scored the second (unassisted). Silver Creek came back after the next face off , with Zack Williams scoring after picking the ball up at midfield. Anthony Bianchi tied the game at 8-8 on a feed from Gorman, but Jimerson broke up an Aquinas clear and send the ball to Seneca for an open-net goal and Zack Williams found Zed Williams cross crease in man up to give Silver Creek a 10-8 lead with 5:478 left in the quarter. The Irish scored at 2:21 with an unassisted drive by Heston and then scored again with less than a minute left (Heston from Vogl) and the game was tied (10-10) yet again.
A fourth quarter surge by Aquinas gave them the game. The teams started by treading goals, with Heston scoring the first goal (unassisted). Seneca scored for Silver Creek (assisted by Zack Williams) for the tie but it was, however the last goal for the Black Knights, as AQ scored the next three. Gorman passed the ball to Bianchi on the crease and Heston scored the last of his six goals in the game before Gorman finished the AQ scoring with a feed from Heston. With two minutes left, the L' il Irish held on the ball, playing catch behind the net.
Aquinas moves on to the final four, playing Corning East (Section IV), who just beat a strong Skaneateles (7-6) from Section III. That game will be played at Cicero-North Syracuse High School on Thursday (5:30) for the upstate championship on Thursday.

-- The Class A quarter final game was the last one of the day, and Fairport used consistent scoring to take a 10-5 victory over Orchard Park.
The teams traded the first two goals of the game with the Quakers scoring the first goal right from the face off. Senior midfielder Matt Wilson won the face off and put the ball past Fairport goalie Blaze Riorden less than a minute into the game. About a minute later the Red Raiders returned with an unassisted goal by Tim Modesti, who picked up a loose ball on the crease. After breaking up an OP clear, Brendan Saylor got the ball and took it behind the cage, where he set up a crease drive and scored with six seconds left the in the quarter. Fairport led after one, 2-1.
Fairport scored the first goal in the second quarter when sophomore middie Brian Martin sent the ball to Saylor on a fast break clear, but Orchard Park came right back with a goal by Wilson on a drive to the left and a bounce shot. Three minutes later, James Manila scored an unassisted goal from the left to put the Red Raiders up 4-2. With just under three minutes left, Martin Manilla dodged his man out front and took the scored to 5-2 which held to the half time break.
The Red Raiders posted the same performance in the third quarter, outscoring the Quakers 3-1. After a quiet start, Fairport scored at 4:45 (Chris Button from Saylor) and then Martin scored on a feed from Martin Manilla after a save by Riorden and a full field clear by Chris Benza. The Red Raiders scored one more time before OP scored their lone goal of the quarter when Sean Purtill found Ben Johnson with about a minute and a half left in the quarter.
The Quakers had a tough fourth quarter, picking up quite a few penalties as their frustration mounted, as Fairport added two more goals and after the Red Raiders start their substitutions, OP scored two more goals. The first by Trevor Vargo (unassisted) and the second, with 0:01 left in the game, by Ben Johnson.
Fairport now continues to the State semi finals, as they face undefeated Ithaca (18-0) from Section four, who defeated West Genesee 13-5 tonight. The game will be played at Cicero-North Syracuse High School at 8:00 on Thursday night.
