Brett Wood scored the first (with Nick Giovannini assisting) and Matt Koopman scored the second. Koopman, a senior, led scoring for the Blue Devils with 4g. Haverling scored five unanswered goals in the second quarter, three of which were scored by Rossi. Reed added the first goal of the quarter during a fast-break with a feed from Eric Dickson. Haverling's sixth goal was scored just 10 seconds later after Nesbitt took the ball straight in from a technical face-off win. Rossi scored the last three goals of the quarter and four straight goals spanning into the third quarter. Each of the goals had a different teammate assisting (Brian Gable, Nesbitt and Reed). Haverling led 9-2 going into halftime.
In the third quarter Haverling added five more goals before Mynderse scored again. Senior attackman Mark Martuscello added both of his goals and his assist during the third quarter. Mynderse's lone goal of the quarter scored during a broken clear. Junior midfielder Brett Wood picked up the ground ball near the midfield line and looked to the center of their offensive area. Freshman attackman Mike Clark was near the area and after a ground ball of his own, finished with a score and his first Varsity goal. The third quarter ended in running time, but the Blue Devils were about to start off strong in the fourth quarter.
Mynderse scored the first four goals of the final quarter, including three goals on the first three shots of the quarter. -- East Rochester, in their second Varsity season, started out strong, scoring the first goal against visiting Pal-Mac and ending the first quarter up 2-1. Palmyra-Macedon tied the game at the half, but then took off, holding the Bombers scoreless for the last half while adding one goal in the third and three in the last quarter to win the first game of the season 7-3. Raider Raider Head Coach, Joe Hill noted the second half change, "We came into the second half a more patient team on offense and it helped us open the game up late in the third and early fourth quarters."
The coach noted that it was great to get on a full field, "It was really evident today that team offense is the last thing to click within a team, especially when you have been on a parking lot since the start of the season."
-- GRALL opening day only consisted of two games this year and in the second game of day Aquinas defeated St. Francis 14-2. It was the second game in two days against Section Five opponents as last night they beat Bishop Kearney 14-3. The Little Irish looked strong as eight different players made the score book.
Sophomore Erich Wischmeyer, a transfer from Hilton, started in the goal for the Little Irish. He faced seven shots on cage and stopped them all, holding the Red Raiders scoreless in the first half. During the first half, Aquinas added four goals in each of the first and second quarters. The starting attack at Aquinas scored nine of the fourteen goals and was a part of all but the final two. Junior Klay Heston (5g-2a), senior Austin Gorman (2g-5a) and senior Bernard Gauthier (2g-3a) were the driving force for the Little Irish. With a different style from last season, first year Aquinas Head Coach Kevin Martin has brought patience to Aquinas. Aquinas only took 32 shots in today's game with 20 coming from the starting attack. The shooters were patient and many times the team looked for a good shot rather than just unloading at the goal.
Aquinas scored four straight to open up the third quarter with goals from Heston, junior Mike Messina, Gautheir and junior Scotty Erbland. The fifth goal of the third quarter was the first goal for Aquinas that did not have a member of the starting attack involved. Senior midfielder Anthony Bianchi scored with 3:01 remaining with an unassisted goal. With 0:18 remaining in the quarter St. Francis added their first goal as Jeremy Albert scored with an assist from Cooper Stefaniak. The third quarter ended with Aquinas leading 13-1.
In the fourth quarter, partially due to subs and partially to running time, only one goal was scored by each team. Aquinas led off with freshman Billy Lombardi scoring his first goal of the season. Lombardi added two goals last season after coming up to Varsity for Sectionals. He also took the majority of the face-offs for the Little Irish finishing 5/11. The final goal of the game was scored by St. Francis' Robert Moll and assisted by Albert with 1:26 remaining during an extra man opportunity.
In the cage for St. Francis, Bradley Whitford finished with 4 saves. Sophomore Tom Mscichowski played the second half for the Little Irish and finished with 3 saves (60%). At the face off, Messina took the remainder of the Little Irish face-offs and finished 4/6. Messina led in ground balls for Aquinas with 9 while senior defenseman Mike Owens added 4 ground balls to lead the defense.
