-- In a back and forth battle that never saw either team take more than a one goal lead, the Penn Yan Mustangs improved their record to 12-1 with their thrilling overtime victory over Section VI powerhouse, Hamburg this afternoon at Howe Field. Penn Yan struck first as Ty Trombley won the opening face off, passed the ball to Adam Trombley who found John Linnan at the top of the crease. The teams traded goals for the next nine plus minutes, and the first quarter ended with the score tied at 4-4. The hard, close play continued into the second quarter as teams once again traded goals with neither team gaining more than a one goal advantage. Kamholtz turned back seven shots in the first half. Hamburg held a slight edge in first half face offs winning 7 of 12. The second half started with Hamburg receiving a 3 minute non releasable penalty for an illegal stick, but the Bulldogs played excellent man down defense and the Mustangs were unable to score. Throughout the third quarter, the two teams, once again, traded goals with Hamburg winning the quarter 3-2 to force another tie at 8-8 at the end of the third quarter.
The tension began to build as both teams traded goals as time ticked down in the fourth. Penn Yan went up 10-9 with 3:30 left in the game but Hamburg was able to get possession and Bulldog attackman, Matt Springer was able to get free and put a low shot through the legs of Kamholtz at the 1:44 mark of the fourth to knot the game at 10-10.
Hamburg won the ensuing face off and called a timeout. When play resumed, Hamburg ran the clock down to 0:20 seconds and called yet another time out to set up an isolation play for Springer to take the final shot. The play was executed properly, but Kamholtz was able to smother the shot as the horn sounded in regulation.
In the first overtime period, senior Ty Trombley came up big at the "x" for the Mustangs with a win and Coach Hobart immediately called a time out. When play resumed, Linnan held the ball on the restart, passed it to Adam Trombley who found senior attackman Matt Osgood to the right of the net. He took a step to his left upon receiving the ball and fired the game winner over Maxwell's right shoulder. The Mustang bench charged the field in jubilation.
