Thursday: Face offs a key Factor in CA and Thomas Wins
Face offs were a key part of a number of games tonight with Thomas players combining for 12/18, Canandaigua's Marshall Johnson winning 20/20 in their 15-5 win over Penn Yan, Max Brauer winning 15/22 face offs for Brighton in their 19-2 win over the Lightning. Although Irondequoit was the winner against the Panthers, Pittsford won 15/18 in their game.
Fairport, Livonia, Hilton, Geneva, Brockport and Midlakes all won in Thursday games.
Fairport 17 - Churchville-Chili 5
-- Fairport continued their streak taking their fourth consecutive game to running time as they defeated Churchville-Chili 17-5. The Red Raiders dominated in nearly every aspect of the game.
Fairport scored 12 of their 17 goals during unsettled situations with six goals on fast-break, three goals after breaking a Saints clear and three goals during extra man offense. Fairport also played strong at the face-off. Mike Lehmann finished 11/22 (however of the 11 that he lost, five were on technical losses). Keith Preston finished 8/15 for Churchville-Chili.
Kris Sterzin played the first three quarters for the Red Raiders and only faced five shots on cage (saving two). Kyle Hall finished the game with 1 save and 2 goals against. Adam Difulvio, the Churchville-Chili goalie, finished the day with 12 saves and 17 goals against. However, this number doesn't’t demonstrate some of the strong saves that Difulvio had. Difulvio stopped a number of shots that came from on top of the crease.
Fairport won the first three quarters 5-2, 6-0 and 4-1; in the fourth quarter the Red Raiders tied the Saints 2-2. Brendan Saylor once again led the Red Raiders with 4g-4a. Martin Manilla (4g-2a) and Aaron Jones (3g-2a) also were big scoring threats for Fairport. Manilla, Jones or Saylor were involved (either scoring or assisting) in all but five Fairport goals.
Lehmann scored an unassisted goal with 10:23 remaining in the second quarter from a face-off fast-break to increase the Red Raider lead to 7-2. In the third quarter Chris Reed stripped the ball in the defensive end of the field and cleared the ball quickly up field for Fairport leading to a Manilla from Saylor fast-break goal. Long stick James Cunningham scored with an assist from Andrew Kristy on the ensuing face-off for a fast-break goal at 7:41. Chris Button assisted Mike Schwab for another fast-break goal with only 0:41 remaining in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Fairport started the scoring with Timothy Book taking an outside shot during an extra-man opportunity (with an assist from Chris Button). Preston scored next for the Saints with an outside shot from in front of the cage, assisted by Jon Hemink. Hemink scored the first three goals for the Saints (all unassisted). With 4:18 remaining Stephen Danylyshyn scored from a feed by Cook during another man-up opportunity for the Red Raiders. The final goal of the game was scored by Preston, with a feed from attackman Ryan Yunker for Churchville-Chili.

Coach Wood writes of Doyle, "[he] is a solid goalie and came up with a host of 1 on 1 saves point blank to keep the pressure on us to put the ball in the goal."

-- Given the long-standing rivalry between Canandaigua and Penn Yan, there was a good sized crowd at Evans Field to see what most expected to be an exciting, and perhaps close game. Although the Canandaigua fans were pleased with the 15-5 win, the game was neither close nor exciting. CA's depth of quality players was too much for the youngsters from Penn Yan to handle and although a few of player match ups were even, the majority were not.
The Mustangs started the scoring just a minute into the game when Adam Trombley found Cole Castle up field on a clear. Less than two minutes later The Braves scored the first of five in a row, when Devin Alves scored on a feed from Bryan Peck on a cut from the left side of the cage.Alves scored again with just over a minute left in the quarter on a back to front feed from Brain Scheetz. The Braves led at the end of the first quarter 2-1.
It was Alves again at the top of the second quarter as the Braves scored three goals while holding the Mustangs scoreless. After a ball bounced off a defender on the crease a number of players ended up on the ground. When the ball popped out, Alves scooped it up and put in the net. Canandaigua maintained control of the ball for the majority of the quarter and took time off the clock with slow, methodical play set-ups. Will Johnson scored a man up goal at 9:23 when after cutting to the crease he received the ball from Scheetz. At 7:13 Marshall Johnson scored an unassisted goal on a drive from the top of the box. The Braves led at half time 5-1.
Penn Yan struggled with pressure from the Canandaigua rides and, in fact, had three goals scored against them as the result of failed clears. At one point, senior goalie Ethan Kamholtz ran the ball to his offensive end simply because no one broke open for his outlet pass.
The Mustangs came back with two goals to start the second half. Castle scored on a quick feed from Matt Osgood in the first minute of the third quarter taking the score to 5-2. Osgood scored an unassisted goal on an a-cut drive from behind the net to take the score to 5-3, but that was the end of the run as the Braves scored the next five goals, all within a three and a half minute period to take the score to 10-3 with 4:23 left.
Canandaigua also controlled the face off stats, winning 17 of 24 and giving the braves a significant amount of ball time as the result.
Penn Yan closed out the third quarter with a goal by Nate Nichols, who received the ball after cutting to the crease and connecting with Osgood. The quarter ended twenty seconds later with CA up 10-4.
Two minutes into the fourth quarter Canandaigua scored three more, all within a forty-eight second period. Tanner Scharr started it off with quick cross-crease pass from Will Johnson. Brian Scheetz added an unassisted goals after intercepting a clearing pass and shooting on an open net from the top of the box and Alves added the third on a drive from behind the net. Adam Trombley scored the last goal for Penn Yan in man up with 4:36 remaining, but CA countered on the ensuing face off (Adam Knapton from Marshall Johnson), and then scored the final goal on the next face off when Brandon Thomson scored at 3:49.
In the final analysis, Canandaigua controlled the ball on both ends of the field. Their player depth allowed for more match ups and a number of mismatches, they used eleven different players on the offensive book and their pressure on rides frustrated Penn Yan.
Scoring for Canandaigua were Deven Alves (4g), Brian Scheetz (1g-3a), Bryan Peck (1a), Will Johnson (1g-1a), Marshall Johnson (1g-1a), Tom LaCrosse (2g), Brandon Thomson (2g), Tanner Scharr (3g), Collin Peck (1a) and Adam Knapton (1g).
Scoring for Penn Yan were Cole Castle (2g), Adam Trombley (1g-1a), Matt Osgood (1g-2a) and Nat Nichols (1g).
