Tuesday: Penfield and Rush Win
Penfield played a close game with Schroeder and was the 11-9 winner. Rush Henrietta also won an 11-9 victory, there game against host Irondequoit.
Sometimes the most basic of tasks can make the difference between winning and losing, and such was the case this afternoon as Kelly McKenna won four faceoffs in a row, setting up a series of Penfield goals and giving the Patriots an 11-9 victory over host Schroeder.
The first quarter was a study in patience as both teams protected their ball time and carefully picked their shots in light of excellent one on one and team defense played at both ends of the field. Schroeder scored first, at 4:48, when Jay Willmes received a feed from Andy Winslow and put one past Penfield goalie, Brian Dell. The Warriors scored again, this time at 2:11, when Grant Catalino scored a unassisted goal. Penfield ended the first quarter with an unassisted goal by Kelly McKenna at 1:45, and the quarter ended with Webster up 2-1.
Penfield tied the game in the first thirty seconds of the second quarter when Connor Rice scored on a feed from Mike Arvan at 11:28. Nine minutes passed before Mike Tota put Schroeder up with an assist by Grant Catalino at 2:34. Penfield tied 0:23 second later when Ben Foster scored, in man up, on a pass from McKenna. At 1:35, Grant Catalino stole the ball on a Penfield clear and ran the ball for a 1-on-1 scored against Dell. The half ended with Schroeder up 4-3.
Penfield scored first after the half, when Arvan scored at 10:16 after driving from the top of the box. Winslow put the Warriors ahead again when he received the ball from Nick Monney and bounced the ball of goalie Brain Dell's stick at 6:24. Penfield came right back with an unassisted goal by Paul Leonard at 5:16 after he got the ball on a broken clear. At this point McKenna, who had, uncharacteristically, lost a number of face off earlier in the game, came alive winning all his second half face offs, a number of which, resulted in goals for the Patriots. Rice scored on the first face off (assisted by Arvan). Rice scored again with an assist from Arvan at 2:03. Schroeder ended the quarter down 6-7 after Tota scored on a feed from Catalino at 0:20.
The Warriors tied the game again at the top of the fourth quarter as Tota took the ball from Winslow at 11:05 on a cross cage feed and a shot high off stick. Mike Cummins scored for Penfield at 9:44 on a feed from Dave Malone from behind the cage. McKenna won the next two face offs in a row, producing scores by Malone (assisted by Ben Foster) at 9:34 and by Malone on an assist from McKenna at 9:05 and giving the Patriots a 10-7 lead. The pressure remained however, as Schroeder came back at 5:44 with a goal by Austin Orsini, assisted by Tota on a run straight from the Warrior clear. Penfield took back the three goal lead when they scored their last goal of the game when Malone scored on an assist from Rice in man up. Catalino added one more for Schroeder at 1:07 on an unassisted drive from the side of the goal.
The Penfield defense of Alex Nowak, Joe Clay and Kevin Randall each had excellent play in front of goal, Brian Dell (9 saves). Paul Vanthof turned Webster's Catalino back on a number of drives, and kept him from the ball on a number of critical plays.
Schroeder's Drew Palmer played well as did Chris Nicodemi who matched up, when possible, against McKenna. Dennis Costanza made 12 saves and was replaced by Zach Marshall (1 save) when Costanza was received a 30 second penalty for pushing.
