Saturday: Penn Yan Wins in Outbracket

The only outbracket game for Section Five pitted the Penn Yan Mustangs against the Canton Golden Bears of Section Ten on Saturday at St. John Fisher College.
  


  
 The game was close and controlled by the defensive units of each team. Canton scored first at 8:53, when senior attackman, Dustin Lawrence scored on an assist by junior attackman, Sam Draper. Six minutes later The Mustangs scored as sophomore attackman, Dan McGuffie hit the net on a feed from senior attackman, Kyle Eakens. The quarter ended in a 1-1 tie.
  
The second quarter was not much different as each team scored two goals and the defensive units and the goalies kept the shots away from the goal.
  
Canton scored first at 7:40 when Draper scored with an assist from senior attackman, Sean Flanagan. Penn Yan came back with two goals, the first, unassisted, from senior middie, John Van Houten and the second, at 3:56 on a man up goal by sophomore midfielder, Steven Carlsen with an assist from sophomore middie, Dan Mesler. Canton's senior middie, Dustin Lawrence ended the half with his goal at 0:46. The half ended tied at 3.
  
The game winning goal was scored in the third quarter.
  
The Golden Bears scored a go-ahead goal when Lawrence hit the net assisted by Flanagan at the 10:56 mark. It was the last goal to be scored by Canton.
  
Senior middie, Brendan Hamm scored for the Mustangs, assisted by Van Houten to tie the game at 4 with 8:36 to go in the the third. At 4:16, Mesler scored an unassisted goal to give Penn Yan the lead.
  
No one scored in the last quarter of the game and the Mustangs won, 5-4.
  
Junior Goalie, Jeff Borie recorded 10 saves for the Bears while freshman goalie, R.J. Wickham recorded 12 for the Mustangs. Each team took about 20 shots.
  
Penn Yan advances to the Western Regionals on Tuesday, June 1st at Canisius College. The game will start at 5:30. Brighton will play Amherst at 3:30 and Canandaigua will play Orchard Park at 8:00.
