Players of the Week - April 1, 2014
The first Player of the Week awards are Penfield's senior defenseman Jacob O`Connor and Victor's sophomore attackman Ryan Maloney. The players were selected from over thirty worthy nominations submitted last week.
Defensive Player of the Week
Jake O`Connor
The senior defenseman from Penfield had a demonstrative game against West Genesee and helped the Patriots to a 4-3 overtime win against one of the top teams in the country. Says Head Coach John Schembri, "Jake has worked very hard in the off season to fill the shoes of our graduating class of defensemen. He is a great leader on and off the field. Respectful and hardworking in everything he does, he was selected as a captain of the team by his peers."
Offensive Player of the Week
Ryan Maloney
The sophomore attackman from Victor had 3g-2a in their season opener against Spencerport and followed that with 4g-1 assist when the Blue Devils beat Canandaigua last weekend. He twice had the game-tying goal and assisted on the game winning goal. From one of his nominations, "Off the field, Ryan is a also a very strong student. Last fall, he volunteered to help with the youth boys lacrosse group for skills and drills sessions -- giving back to the game." Last fall he announced his commitment to continue playing lacrosse at Cornell.
The Connors and Ferris law firm is sponsoring recognition for a Varsity level Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week this year.
Each week a small committee of SportsFive.NET staff members and Section Five Lacrosse Committee members will create and review review nominations from coaches, players and fans and pick one offensive and one defensive player who have excelled in a game or games during the season.
The award winners will receive a commemorative shirt and will featured on the SportsFive.NET web site.
