HFL Wins Fourth Straight Section V Title, Advances to States

GENEVA-6 at HONEOYE FALLS-LIMA-16 -  HFL continued their gen vs hflSectional Title streak with the program’s 4th straight Championship (the longest current streak in Section Five) with a 16-6 win over Geneva. The Cougars scored eight unanswered goals, holding the Panthers scoreless until about halfway through the second quarter. The Panthers finished out the game with five of the last six goals, making the score appear closer than the actual contest.

The Cougars were led by Class C All-Tournament MVP Grady Goodberlet who finished with 6g-1a to lead his team. Joining him in the All-Tournament Team were sophomore Ben Segar (2g-1a) and senior Marco Vengoechea (4g-2a). Three defensive players for the Cougars were also named to the All-Tournament Team with defensemen Ezra Gathercole and Braden Fugate both making the team as well as goalie Jason Bennett. Bennett finished the game with 6s/6ga. For Geneva, eighth grader Dominic Gaglianese (2g), Senior Ryland Dunham (2g-1a) gen vs hfland junior Jack Dunham (1g-1a) represented them on the All-Tournament Team. Semi-Final teams Aquinas (Jack Bell) and Wayne (Cody Crandell) were also had players named to the All Tournament team.

In the first quarter, HFL scored five unanswered goals. The first came two minutes into play with a single player dodge by Vengoechea. Tanner Olin (2g on the night) scored the second goal off an inside feed from Alexander Meisenzahl (1a). The second quarter began with three more HFL goals, Goodberlet scored, unassisted, off a fast-break, Vengoechea scored off an outside shot and an assist from Jackson Coon (1g-1a) and Segar scored unassisted off a dodge to the inside. The opening goal from Geneva came from Ryland Dunham with 6:48 remaining on the clock. At halftime, the Cougars led 12-1.

HFL added another three goals to start off the third quarter and take their largest lead of the game. Vengoechea scored two with Goodberlet adding the third. With 3:48 left in the third quarter, Geneva started their scoring run. Gaglianese, Jack. Dunham and Ryland Dunham gen vs hfleach scored one goal to bring the game back under a 12-goal differential. The final goal of the game for HFL was an unassisted goal from Goodberlet. In the final five minutes of the game, Gaglianese scored his second and defenseman Gianni Velazquez scored their lone goal off an assist from J. Dunham. In the cage for Geneva, Owen Marquart recorded 6 saves.

HFL moves into the Sub-Regional match-up of the State Tournament where they will face the Section VI Champion Hamburg. The Bulldogs won their match-up 11-3. Historically, HFL has faced Hamburg six times with each team winning 3 games. They last faced earlier in the season on April 18th, where HFL won 7-4. Additionally, they faced in last season’s Sub-Regional Game, where HFL won 11-4. Prior to that contest, HFL had faced Lake Shore the two previous years. Across Section Five, in addition to the HFL game, the Bulldogs faced Thomas (lost 14-7), Penn Yan (lost 15-7), and Brighton (lost 15-5).
