Monte Leads for Fairport in 8-7 Win

 SPORTSFIVE REPORT:  

Fairport held off the late advances of Pittsford in their 9-7 win over the Panthers.  Fairport, who led for much of the game, lost the lead for the first time with 4:28 remaining on the clock.  The Red Raiders had to keep up the pressure with two goals in the final 32 seconds of the contest.  Freshman midfielder Mitchell Monte finished the game with five of the teams eight goals (including both in the final seconds of the game).  Pittsford’s James Cook (2g-1a) and Ben Steingass (2g-1a) led the offensive efforts of the Panthers.

Fairport scored the opening two goals with Jake Koonmen and Monte scoring just over a minute apart in the first quarter.  The Red Raiders held the lead for 42 minutes before Pittsford could force the first tie of the game at 6-6.  Steingass scored the opening goal for Pittsford with 7:34 remaining in the quarter.  Koonmen and senior Billy Meagher scored the next two goals for Fairport to give them their largest lead of the game at 4-1.  The Panthers scored the next two to keep the game close with assisted goals by Luke Fliss (from James Cook) and Gustav Murphy (from Brady Goetz).  Monte scored the final goal of the first half to put the Red Raiders up 5-3 going into halftime.

The lone goal of the third quarter belonged to the Panthers with Steingass scoring unassisted with 2:58 remaining on the clock.  In the fourth quarter Monte opening the scoring before a three goal run by the Panthers.  Cook scored two with Goetz scoring the third.  Pittsford held their lead for just under four minutes before Monte’s last minute pressure was too much for the Panther defense.

Defensively, Pittsford senior Charlie DeBiase led in ground balls with four and takes and with three.  Jackson Green (3) and Colby Simonetti (3) also added to the final count.  The Panthers move on to play Rush-Henrietta on Thursday with Fairport playing Bishop Kearney on Saturday.
