Thomas Returns Many with Experience

Webster Thomas 2021

Class M - Monroe County League

Unlike most teams in the section, Thomas only lost two seniors to 2020 graduations and so they have many players who were successful as underclassmen. Although all that youth was tough in 2019, leaving the Titans with their first losing season since 2005, there will most certainly be a payoff this year even as they play in the most competitive class.

ThomasThe Titans have strength all over the field but starting with the goalie. Ethan Ruller was the first team goalie pick as a sophomore in MC-d2 and is committed to Cornell University. He finished 2019 with 155 saves (55%) and is a four-year starter and a three-time captain.  Playing in defense and as a Long-Stick midfielder is junior, Eli Adams. He was a freshman starter in 2019 and the very athletic player is a starter on the three sports he plays at Thomas.

In the midfield two seniors are returning and will control the ball. Cade Spencer according to Coach Ruller is "an athletic player, big and very athletic. He can play many positions. He is committed to play at Geneseo next year. Joining him is Ryan Prine, "a nice shifty midfielder with a good feel on offense". He is a three-year starter and will play at Roberts Wesleyan next year.

In the attack is senior Joe Russo who will start the 2021 season with a career record of 25g-11a. He led the team in points as a sophomore and the three-year starter will also play at Geneseo next year. Also in the attack is junior David Petz who is a three-sport athlete, and he starts on all three teams. Coach Ruller says, "He is a very smart player. He is a gritty, tough attackman who's like a coach on the field." That makes sense as he is the son of former Head Coach Matt Petz which gives Coach Ruller two coaches sons on the first this year.

The Titans have a challenging schedule this year, playing Pittsford, Fairport and McQuaid from Class A and they will face Irondequoit and Penfield from Class B. It will be interesting to watch them play three games in a row, facing, from Class B, Canandaigua (5/26), Victor (5/28) and the Brighton (6/2). Those games will give them plenty of information as they set up for the tournament.
