A Full Day of Lacrosse at HFL

-  SPORTSFIVE REPORT:  Tonight’s 12-5 win for HFL over Livonia-Avon capped a long day of Lacrosse at HFL High School Field.  There were multiple contests across all levels of boy’s and girl’s lacrosse raising awareness and donations for “Cancer Day”.  In addition to today’s boy’s game, the girls defeated Horseheads 16-6 (HERE).  Today’s contest was a vastly different game from the contest just last week between the same two teams.  After a back-and-forth contest last Saturday, today’s match was much more one-sided.  The Cougars took long stretches of possession and gave the Lakers very little time on offense.  The Lakers attempted to use what opportunities they could get; however, it was not enough.  There were standout performances from Livonia goalie Matt Beachel with 7 saves in the first quarter (10 total for the game), HFL attackman Chase Perryman with 4g-2a, and HFL face-off midfielder Drew Angelo.

HFL FileAngelo was the key to the Cougar victory.  He dominated the faceoff and gave HFL possession after possession.  This allowed the offense to slow down and forced the Laker offense to rush.  Angelo won the all five of the first quarter face-offs and along with the patient offense, only allowed Livonia-Avon one offensive possession in the entire first quarter.  Perryman scored back to back goals to start off the game; both goals came from a midrange shot along the left flat with assists from Patrick Donahoe and Quinn Kailbourne.  The first Livonia-Avon goal came off a slow break.  Christian Rumfola pressed the ball up field down the middle and fed AJ Peri just above the crease with 5:11 remaining in the half.  HFL added their third goal with 0:08 on the clock with an inside feed from Marco Vangeochea to Braydn Trybuskiewicz.  The Cougars led 3-1 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Cougars solidified their lead.  Kailbourne, Trybuskiewicz, Donahoe and Perryman each added a goal (all four assisted).  Livonia-Avon’s long goal was scored off an unsettled restart after a successful ride.  Rumfola scored the goal with an assist from Jackson McEnerney.  The Cougars ended the half with a 7-2 lead.

In the third quarter, HFL pulled away with the first four goals of the second half.  Matthrew Brassie scored the first unassisted goal of the game with a drive from behind the cage.  HFL followed up with goals from Angelo, Perryman and Trybuskiewicz.  The Lakers added another goal with 0:31 left on the clock during a flag down situation.  McEnerney scored with a midrange shot from the right side.  HFL led 11-3 after three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, both teams started playing from their bench.  HFL’s Vengoechea (a freshman) scored his 8th goal of the season with a drive from behind the cage.  The final two goals were scored by Livonia-Avon.  With 3:42 remaining and during extra-man offense, McEnerney scored from the top right off a feed from Rumfola.  Just over a minute later Tanner Gray drove along the right side and dropped the ball down to Rumfola on the crease (coming from behind).  The Cougars won the draw and held on to the ball from the rest of the game.

In the cage for Livonia-Avon, Beachel played just over 3 quarters.  Sophomore goalie Colton Rose took over with 10 minutes left in the game and recorded 2 saves (1ga).  For the Cougars, Trevor Reese played the first three quarters and recorded 2 saves.  Sophomre Jackson Blythe took over at the same time as Rose and recorded 1 save (2ga).

Next up on the schedule for Livonia-Avon is their contest against Bishop Kearney on Tuesday.  For HFL, they face Hilton on Thursday.
