Penfield 4 - West Genesee 3 in Double Overtime

- Less than thirty seconds into the second overtime period, Penfield`s Jake Sproule picked up his own face-off ground ball and drove to the cage. He scored on a high bounce shot to secure the 4-3 win over Section III`s West Genesee. The Patriots were held scoreless until the fourth quarter, before scoring three goals in three minutes to tie the game. The last six minutes of the final quarter and the entire first overtime were back and forth play with both teams having opportunities to score.

The Patriot defense was exceptional in the win. Jacob O`Connor, Jack Taddeo and Ethan Parks stood in front of goalie Liam Guiton and stopped what is perennially a top offense throughout the state. O`Connor and Taddeo were exceptionally skilled with two one-on-one takes each and three and seven ground balls respectively.Penfield vs WG  Guiton finished with eleven recorded saves (79%) including three point blank saves that he had no business saving. The defensive unit kept the Patriots in the game for three quarters when their offense could not get the ball on the cage. In the second and third quarters there were a combined 13 shots for Penfield with only one shot per quarter on the cage (15% on cage). Throughout the entire 52 minute contest Penfield only had 42% of their shots on cage, but they certainly made them count when they were on the cage.

West Genesee scored the first three goals spanning the entire first half. Ian Cahill scored the opening goal after an inside feed from Ryan McDonald. It was the only goal scored by the Wildcats that was scored during even play. In the second quarter, Penfield was passing the ball around during a two minute non-releasable penalty when the Wildcats stripped the ball and starting running up field. With a flag down at the midfield, David Procopio drove at the goal. As he finished driving, he was pushed into the crease but scored man-down for the Wildcats. Five minutes later West Genesee added their third goal with a man-up shot from Nick Cunningham. The Wildcats led 3-0 at the half.

The third quarter had neither team scoring as the ball moved back and forth for the entire twelve minutes. In the fourth quarter, the Patriots came out swinging and scored their first goal just 1:22 into the quarter. Brian Wall assisted Max Spaan for the opening goal. Two minutes later Sproule scored the first of his two goals (both unassisted).Penfield vs WG  It took less than one minute to tie the game with Carter Jordan coming up the far side of the field and finding Ryan Fulton on a cross the crease feed for the goal. The Patriots scored all three goals in just over three minutes. The remaining time in regulation passed slowly with both team patiently looking to take to go ahead goal. Time expired with West Genesee failing to get a shot off as Penfield`s defense kept them contained.

In the first overtime period, Penfield won the face off and got the first chance at the win. They took two shots with only one on cage. West Genesee took their opportunity and also finished with two shots and only one on cage. Time expired in the first overtime with another strong effort from Penfield`s defense. The second overtime started with another Penfield face-off win by Sproule. He picked up his own ground ball and drove to the cage for the win.

In the cage for West Genesee, Matt Koziol finished with 7 saves (64%). The Wildcats finished with 21 ground balls and defenseman Nick Mellen led his team with five. For the Patriots, Taddeo finished with seven ground balls to lead his team. Sproule finished with six and Guiton finished with four.

The game was dedicated to Joe Adams and money was collected for his family. (More here).

Game NOTE: It was the last game for Section Five official Mark Wickham who is moving to Florida where he already has a number of game ready for him to officiate.
