Penfield Upsets Defending Champion McQuaid Jesuit, 11-9

- After their loss last year in the Class A Finals, Penfield came into tonight’s rematch looking for payback. The third seeded Patriot’s scored the opening goal of the game and never trailed in their 11-9 winPenf vs Vic over last year’s NYS Champion McQuaid Jesuit. The Patriots were led in scoring by Brodie Joyce who finished with 6g-2a and was named Class A All Tournament MVP. Jake Maurer (2g-4a) and Griffin Banister (2g-1a) were also named to the All Tournament Team for Penfield. Defensively, goalie Mason Schembri and defenseman Ronan Boyle rounded out the Patriot players named to the All Tournament team. For the Knights, John Burrows (1g), AJ Quagrello (1g-1a) and Domenic Giangreco (3g) joined goalie Jack Rawleigh in being named to the All Tournament Team. From the Semi Finals, Rush-Henrietta’s Andrew Coleman and Fairport’s Mitchell Monte completed the team. Also during tonight’s contest, Monte was announced as the Section V Offensive Player of the Year.

Penfield came out of the gates with the only goal of the first quarter. Michael Moxley scored with an unassisted drive down the goal line just over one minute into play. The game was back and forth throughout the rest of the Penf vs Vicquarter with both team’s defenses stepping up. Schembri recorded 5 of his 13 saves during the first quarter. For McQuaid Jesuit, Rawleigh also had a strong first quarter with 5 saves of his own (out of 12 total). The scoring picked up in the second quarter with Penfield adding another four and the Knight’s adding two of their own. Quagrello got on the board for McQuaid Jesuit with in crease dodge 13 seconds into the quarter off a feed from the face-off to tie the game at 1-1. This was the only time the game was tied and it lasted less than 30 seconds. Penfield responded with an inside feed of their own with Maurer finding Banister open on the crease. The Patriots kept up the pressure with back to back goals by Joyce. With 3:16 left in the half, Will DiMarco scored for the Knights. The final goal of the half was a series of quick passes with Maurer once again finding Banister open for the goal. Penfield led 5-2 going into halftime.

In the third quarter, McQuaid Jesuit made a strong effort at a comeback. The Knights outscored the Patriots 4-3 and pulled the game within a single goal after a three goal streak. The Knights scored all three goals in less than 30 seconds with Giangreco scoring the opener off a broken clear by DiMarco. That was followed by back to back face-off fast-breaks for the Knights. Penf vs VicThe first was scored by Burrows (assisted by Quagrello) and the second was scored unassisted by Giangreco. With 5:06 remaining in the third quarter, McQuaid Jesuit pulled within a singe goal (7-6). The Patriots stopped the scoring streak but took another four minutes before they scored their final goal of the quarter. Joyce scored his third of the night with a strong single player effort. After multiple dodges he drove to the cage and put the shot into the upper right corner to increase the Patriot lead back to two. Penfield led 8-6 going into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter was back and forth scoring with both teams adding to the their totals, but McQuaid Jesuit never tying the game. Joyce scored his fourth goal from a feed from Maurer followed quickly by Gianforti scoring for the Knights. McQuaid Jesuit’s last goal of the game was scored by Giangreco with a drive along the left goal line with 2:58 left on the clock to once again pull within a single goal. However, it was not enough with Penfield’s defense holding out for the final three minutes. The Patriots offense did not hold the ball and scored their final goal with 1:17 left on the clock. Maurer drove at the cage from behind and found a cutting Joyce near the center of the field. The Patriots held off any other advancement from the Knights to secure their payback and the Section V Title, the first since 2018.

Penfield moves on to the NYS Tournament where they will face off against Orchard Park (Section VI). The Quaker’s faced four Section V opponents this year and finished 2-2. This included a win over Penfield 14-12 earlier in the season and a win against Aquinas (17-12). They also faced McQuaid Jesuit (11-16) and Canandaigua (7-11). Historically, the Patriots have matched up against Orchard Park 16 times with Penfield leading the series 11-5.    [ Story and BOX SCORE
