Joyce Leads Penfield to Section V Class A Repeat

PENFIELD-13 at MCQUAID JESUIT-3   Penfield defended their Section Five Title with a win over McQuaid Jesuit 13-3, grabbing their 8th mcq vs PenfSectional Win over the program’s history.  Their win last season was also against the Knights.  The Patriots were led by Class A All Tournament MVP Brodie Joce.  Joyce, a senior, finished with 5g-2a.  He was joined on the team by junior Griffin Banister (3g), as well as defensemen AJ Theodorakakos, Bear Hollingsworth and goalie Mason Schembri.  The Patriots defense was extremely strong tonight with Schembri (a senior) leading his team with 12 saves / 2 goals against (46 minutes).  Junior Nate Roche came in for the final four minute sand made three impressive saves for Penfield.  The Knights were led in scoring by Dominic Bianchi with 2 of the three goals.  Dominic Camarella scored the third goals.  Both were named to the All Tournament team with defenseman Dominic Hristodoulou and face-off man Domenic Giangreco rounding out the selection.  Giangreco came into tonight’s match-up with a strong performance against RH (12/13 draws and 3a).  From the Semi-Final match-ups Ryan Priddy (Fairport) and Preston Jackson (RH) were selected to the All Tournament Team.

McQuaid opened up the game’s scoring with an unassisted goal by Camarella.  He scored with a drive down the middle and spinning around multipledefenders to score with 8:35 remaining on the clock.  Penfield responded with five more goals in the first quarter, followed by three more in the second quarter before the Knights scored their second goal.  The first Patriot goal was scored by long-stick mcq vs PenfTheodorakakos off a fast-break down the field just over 1 minute after the McQuaid Jesuit goal.  The Patriots took the lead with a goal by Nick Dicataldo (assisted by Harrison Easton).  0:13 later, the added another with Banister scoring off an assist from Joyce.  The half ended with Penfield lead 8-2.  In the third quarter, Penfield added another three goals and continued to hold the Knight offense at bay.  Joyce, Banister and Dicataldo each scored one goal in the third quarter.  The final two goals scored by the Knights were both scored during extra-man offense and were both unassisted goals by Bianchi.

Penfield moves into the Sub-Regional match-up of the State Tournament where they will face the Section VI Champion Kenmore. Historically, Kenmore and Penfield have not matched-up in the Tournament or the regular season.  Kenmore faced-off against Pal-Mac this season with the Red Raiders winning 15-10.  Last Season the Patriots face Orchard Park (this year’s Class B Champion from Section VI) and defeated them 12-10.
