Players of the Week - Group 1

Section V Boys Lacrosse Coordinator Mike Simon in conjunction with Geneva Club Beverages are sponsoring recognition of noteworthy performances throughout the season.

In our first group we have three seniors and a junior who had noteworthy performances in the last week.

Offensive Player of the Week

Brody JoyceBrodie Joyce - Penfield Attackman

Brodie Joyce, the leading offensive player for the Patriots with 10g-2a in two games, scored eight goals and one assist in their game with Fairport, breaking the Penfield scoring record with over 204 points. The Providence bound senior has been a starter since his freshman year.

Head Coach John Schembri says "Brodie has been a leader of our offense for the last two seasons. He is a player that excels in all aspects of the game. Shooting, feeding, and riding. His motor does not quit. He is a difference maker for our team. His performance against a tough divisional opponent vs Fairport was one of the best I have seen in my career. "

Avery ValentiHank Velepec - Irondequoit Midfielder

Hank Velepec is in his third year on the Varsity, and he appears to be stepping up in his senior year. When the chips were down in the fourth quarter of their game at Canandaigua and with 32 seconds left in in regulation Hank scored the first of his two goals taking the score to 6-8. Cooper Moore added one more and with three seconds left Colin Giudice scored the tying goal on a pass from Hank. In overtime Hank scored the unassisted winning goal at 2:41.

Head Coach Aaron Bottazzo says "Henry is a grinder he plays all over the field all game and works extremely hard to improve daily and help with team success. He will do any thing his coaches ask of him and it’s a pleasure to see him have this early success."

Defensive Player of the Week

Jake GibsonWill Simpson - Victor Goalie

Will Simpson is a second year varsity starter with a career average saves percentage of 57%, but that number looks like it is on the rise after making twenty-one saves (84%) when the Blue Devils played West Genesee on Saturday. The junior, committed to Brown University, broke his 200 career saves threshold in the game.

Head Coach Dan Stone says, “Will’s daily preparation in practice and on his own are a direct reflection of his performance. He leads by example so when he speaks, other's listen and respond accordingly. Will embraces the challenges of being a goalie and welcomes the pressure it brings as the final line of defense.”

Defensive Player of the Week

Jake GibsonJoshua Jobson - Thomas Goalie

Joshua Jobson is in his fourth year on the Thomas Varsity and is being recognized for his thewnty-three saves (72%) game against Pittsford in their season opener. The senior, committed to SUNY Albany, is just two saves short of his 300 milestone.

Head Coach Rob Ruller says, “A four year varsity player Josh had his best game of his career. He was just seeing it well today and made some good saves look easy. It was great to see him have that kind of performance especially versus such a quality opponent.”
